I like the look, especially when a lighter shade of rosewood sits between two darker shades.

Form follows function, if it sounds good, fits my hands... sure I'd get one. There are a few D-35s in town that I would be happy to own.

My 414ceLTD has a 3 piece Rosewood back. There’s no structural or sonic differences between the 2 piece or the 3 piece back. Each us equally strong, each provides the same sonic qualities. The main reason they are used is to make the most economic use of the wood. Pieces that are not large enough or shaped correctly to be used on a 2 piece back are often made into 3 piece backs to conserve wood and efficiently use resources. Many, if not most times a 3 piece back is made up of leftover wood from different pieces. They rarely match. I actually prefer a 3 piece because the wood grain contrasts can be so remarkable. Sonically, there’s no appreciable differences.

My D-35 and M-36 scratch my 3 piece back itch.

I think Esteban sells a couple of boxes with 3 piece backs.

Yes, if I liked the tone and feel, the 3-piece back would be just fine with me.

I had a 3 piece for a short while - sold it
Always felt, and still do, that the luthier/builder is using smaller pieces of leftover wood to make a guitar so not their best stuff. Dont like the aesthetics but one of the best sounding Martins I ever played was a 35. One should balance sound and aesthetics and if having a 1 piece or 2 piece back is a preference - it just is. Aesthetics is important otherwise we'd all be playing 18's. |

No reason I would seek one out but no reason why I would not buy one. But my least favorite Martin dread remains the D-35. I have rarely played one I would take home.

Yep.
I've had two Martins, my current M36 and one of the rare EMP-1 models previously mentioned by Wade Hampton, which was Ovangkol with a center of EI Rosewood. I've never owned a D35, or better yet, an HD35, or perhaps better still a 000-35, or maybe a ..... I'm in. |
