I would definitely recommend looking into Theophile Pourchet! He's been a member of our shop for the past two years and of all the young builders we've had over the years he's easily the fastest out of the gate getting to a high build level. Despite trying to convince him to charge more, he's still at a base price of $4K which I think is a really great deal that hopefully won't last long!

Good morning,

I would consider myself an up and coming builder. I've been full time since 2015.

My "Artisan Series" starts at $5,200 and includes many features and wood choices.

Check out the web page for the Artisan series here.

A recent guitar finished for a AGF member is here

PM me to discuss all options available - Would love to work with you.

Joshua House of House Guitars carries a current base price of $3,800.

Another up and coming already hitting the shelves of many reputable dealers is McNally Guitars

Here's another builder that comes to mind under $5,000. Nyberginstruments.com. He's a Canadian builder and looks to be doing great work.

Tony Klassen (New Era Guitars) builds fantastic instruments in the Larson and Gibson tradition, they start at about 3.5k, which is incredible given his reputation and the quality of his instruments. Another name which has to be mentioned is Kevin Kopp (Gibson-style). His guitars start at about 4.9k, also pretty low for a builder considered among the very best in the world in the Gibson camp.

I have to wonder, bho, why you ask? You already have at least one guitar in your collection that would cost well north of 5K new, and a wide variety of fine guitars, none inexpensive. If you are looking for someone to build you something as good as your Circa for $4000, I think you are going to look in vain. If I were you I would stand pat. If $5000 is burning a hole in your pocket, use it as a deposit on another Circa. During the two year wait, sell your Martins, Collings, and Grevens to finance the difference.

I just got a custom madsen guitar finished and it is top notch in every way. I should get some pics together and post them.
Dylan, please post your pics, I'd love to see them. I used to live near Neenah, WI, and Andrew Madsen did superb repair work for me. Now I need to check out his guitar-making skills!

Not bad advice! Still, the thrill of the chase is hard to resist...

Cheers

She’s a one-woman shop at her Preservation Guitar Co. in Arkansas that makes these gorgeous parlors. Her base price is $1900-2500. I want to order one so bad.

I just checked her website, beautiful work. And she apprenticed with Todd Cambio, that's interesting. Thanks for posting this

One more luthier in this category comes to mind, Larry Nair at tahoeguitar.com. Beautiful-looking instruments, great attention to detail, very professional skills and presentation.

I think John Walker may be another one under or close to $5k base. My Lochsa was $5650 with cocobolo and Adirondack and sunburst top, 3 or 4 years ago.
