Default SOLD - 1939 Gibson Recording King Ray Whitely Model 1028

A very cool, great sounding, wonderful playing, non-original, nearly 80 year old guitar. Just got it back from David Sheppherd who went through her completely and made sure she is in tip top shape.

Don't know all history, but here's what I do know. I bought from working musician but he had not played in many years. In fact it was his father's guitar, purchased sometime in early 60's. When his dad got it, it had the original sunburst removed. About 5 years ago, as an honor to his deceased father, he had a bandmate/luthier "restore" it, spray new sunburst, add repro tuners, and redo the peghead logo. After it was completed he played a bit, but didn't want it as his gigging guitar, so he put it away. I snagged it, had David Sheppherd shore up some loose braces and give his thumbs up.

I really like this guitar. Plays like butter. Has that old vintage sound. Everything you would expect. If it was original, they list at 18-22k. No idea what they sell for in reality, so few move.

Mohogany back and sides
Adi top
1 3/4 nut
V neck profile, very comfy (to me)
24.75 scale
Refinished, repro tuners

A few repaired cracks and a worn spot on top wear arm would rest...a few other dings and such as expected for something this age, but all in all, in really good condition. Needs nothing. Plays like a new guitar.

More pics.

Here is how she sat some years ago

And more recent shots

Date in guitar says 1940, but these was stamped by Montgomery Wards at that time, the guitar shipped from Gibson in 1939 according to old Gibson log books

Think pre-war vintage Gibson, but rarer and more unique

Guess I will keep dropping price. Someone has to love Pre-War Gibsons right?

Wow, this is one of my ‘dream guitars’. I don’t think you’ll need to drop the price any further, I’m sure it will sell soon!

Bump. Also just got sent pic of the original Gibson log book of this one from 1939. So cool. Will post pics tomorrow. 1939 smells terrific. Real vintage. Great sound. Plays like butter. Price at a fraction due to non original finish and tuners.

very, very cool. I have never owned a vintage guitar.. but.. when I (finally) do, I would love for it to be one like this.

Sweet Gibson. Good luck with the sale; hope someone takes this off your hands soon!

As promised, here is the entry from the Gibson log book...so very many years ago. They don't have handwriting like that any more

Smile Nice!

Do you know what kind of finish, and how thick? Is it all overspray or was it sanded clean first?
Looks Lovley! Very classy.
What are the body measurements? Did I miss case info?
Best on this.

Paul

My sincere apologies for absence and not replying sonner. I do not get notifications when this thread is replied to nor notifications of PM. Not to mention we had a medical mishap in the family and I have not been online much the last two weeks.

I am not sure on the finish, but I believe it was refinished in a thin poly. If you check the pics, you can see the guitar had the original sunburst finished (I believe chemically) years ago. So about a dozen years or so ago, the son of the owner who inherited it wanted to put the sunburst back on and that is when it got it's now sunburst and thin poly finish. I tried to post pics from years ago when it was naked without the burst. If the bare naked pics are not showing let me know.

When I sent the guitar to luthier David Shepperd (google him, you will see he is one of the best for these old Gibby/RK's), I told him to make any suggestions he thought were necessary to make this the best playing and best sounding RK guitar he could. I'm a bit of a nitro snob like some and was expecting him to take advantage of the opportunity to refinish it in nitro. He said it sounds great, play it! So I did.

Here is some more info on these old Recording King Ray Whitely's. They are basically a Gibson AJ.
