Default New Neil Young Album ... From 1975!

Neil Young’s ‘lost’ 1975 album Homegrown is set for release next month, 45 years after it was first completed.

Arriving on 19 June via Reprise Records, the 12-track album is described by Young as “the unheard bridge between Harvest and Comes a Time”.

I've heard talk of that album since those days, although somewhere along the way I'd forgotten about it. I guess he didn't! For my ears, the mid-late 70's was his best period, after the big commercial pop of After the Goldrush and Harvest and before he got into some really wild experimentation in the 80's (some good, some not). From On The Beach through Rust Never Sleeps, though, that's the stuff for me (with the exception of Comes a Time, which was pretty nice but lightweight stuff).

To me, this was his equivalent to the Stones run of Beggars Banquest through Exile, the peak part of an absolutely amazing career. And Homegrown was recorded right in the midst of that, I think around the time of Zuma and American Stars and Bars.

I was REALLY into Neil in those days, I was a little young (no pun intended) for On The Beach and Tonight's the Night - I got into those later. But starting with about Zuma, when I was in High School, straight through Rust Never Sleeps, I was in my music listening peak about when he was in his music making peak. I'd have LOVED this Homegrown album then - I have no idea how I'll react to it now, living in such an overwhelmingly different world than we did then, and being a 61 year old guy rather than around 16-20. Should be interesting regardless...

The song, "Homegrown" was on American Stars and Bars and I seem to remember another song or two from that album were released on some of those albums - I wonder if they'll be on this album release or maybe different versions or something?

I'm in also. I've been a Neil fan ever since my brother brought home "Four Way Street" and threw it on the turntable. When Neil did his solo's ( Don't Let it Bring You Down and Cowgirl in the Sand) I turned to my brother and said,' "Who is this guy?" Gosh, the songs were haunting and I have been a fan ever since. Bring it on, Neil!

This is great news. He's got so much material in his archives...the mid 70's is my favorite period for his music. Just what we need right now.

Looking forward to it. I'm glad to see Neil releasing these albums: "Hitchhiker" sessions in 2017 and now "Homegrown" in 2020. Better late than never.

I too look forward to it.

Must be weird to have something in the can so long, and then release it.

Yes, Neil sat on the wonderful live recording of his Jan, 1971 solo acoustic concert 'Live at Massey Hall' until it's release in 2007.

Neil's producer David Briggs wanted to release it way back then but Neil preferred the studio results coming from the 'Harvest' recording sessions.

In the end they were both right, there's room for both those albums in my collection.

Are any of you watching Neil's Fireside Sessions on his website? He's done four of them, so far, and the current one is streaming on neilyoungarchives.com. Each one is about 30 minutes long, and he's digging pretty deep into his catalog (not just the greatest hits).

A lot of these songs were released on different albums over the years, but still worth waiting for, for sure.
