As soon as I saw this thread, the first person that came to mind was Ani Difranco! She absolutely wails!

Catherine Zeta Jones-I don't think she plays guitar, but she is so gorgeous, I can overlook that fact!

>Another vote for Jonatha Brooke! Saw her a few years ago when I had no idea who she was, and have been a fan since.

If you like Jonatha Brooke, check out her ex-bandmate Jennifer Kimball (http://www.jenniferkimball.com). I don't know if Jennifer actually plays guitar, but she's terrific nonetheless

Also, if you like Jonatha/Jennifer check out http://www.saragroves.com

I forgot to mention Joan Baez! She's pretty darn good, as well. I recently heard "Diamonds and Rust" on the radio and it reminded me of how good she is.

Also, I heard Judy Collins' version of "Mr Tamborine Man" on the radio today. I don;t know if she is playing or not, but if so, she should be considered for the list.

No mention yet of Nancy Wilson, fergadsake (or any that I saw, at least)? In my albeit limited exposure to the world's top female guitarists, she'd be clearly at the top of my list, followed by Bonnie Raitt who I don't necessarily consider the flashiest or most technically adept, but I've always loved her style and playing. Nancy Wilson has had my ears (and eyes) for quite a long time. Ani DiFranco and Patty Larkin know their stuff pretty well too.

And -- DUH -- Joni Mitchell, of course....

While I've never actually seen her play a guitar, I have seen her holding guitar so I'll cut her some slack....Gretchen Wilson!

I'd second that. That song was the first piece of guitar music I ever heard, I fell in love with it instantly and though at four years old I barely knew what a guitar was, on the spot I knew I wanted to play like that one day.
