More work from Texas!
The sound port has been an issue for me as mentioned above. Steve and Ryan have listened to me and worked with me to design something different and cool. I think they have succeeded very nicely as I hope the pictures below will confirm. It is not done yet, there are a few more design features coming, but those will have to wait until tomorrow as work has finished in Nacogadoches for today:
Koa cut out laying on guitar... Sound hole cut out of side... Koa inlayed into sides, still needs some cleanup... Koa inlay sanded and smoothed and ready to turn into a sound port, seems a shame to cut it out... Finally, koa inlay is cut out to the final sound hole shape. Notice the diamonds that will tie in with the rosette diamonds. I love it!!!! It came out so much better than I had imagined when I first saw the drawings: Another step that I did not include as it did not show well on pics, another piece of koa was glued internally over the black veneer previously installed. The grain of the koa runs parallel to the side grain and perpendicular to the veneer hence it has become a plywood and is very strong! There will be additional design done here, you might guess some, but I think there will be surprises as well. Thanks for watching. Last edited by TomB'sox; 07-29-2015 at 06:24 PM. |

I like it. Unique and very much ties in with the rosette. I'll bet some abalone dots will show up somehow.

Here are a couple of action shots from yesterday's work.
First Ryan, apparently fresh out of the water polo court, doing some very delicate routing around the sound hole. Apparently getting this far with this set of sides and having something go wrong now creates a degree of tension with each successive job! The next shot shows Steve doing some hand work on the above. To me this shows a guy really "getting into his work". He appears to me to be wearing the guitar at this point. Feel free to add your own caption.... |

Tom, this is awesome. Going to look incredible from the players perspective. Really well done. Can't wait to see the finished soundport.
And the caption might read ... "And we can see who wears the big boy pants in this duo!"

If the chisel slips Steve might be singing soprano!

Very true, he would also be crying like a new born if he screwed up those sides now!!! Last edited by TomB'sox; 07-31-2015 at 01:56 PM. |

Thanks for the kind words, guys. And thankfully, no chisel slips.
And, sides are still intact. At least they were when we left the shop this afternoon... Steve |

Schweet soundport! You are gonna love lookin' at that while you play.
The excitement level really starts to elevate when the box is closed. All those sugarplum fairies dancing and all!

I agree, everything compliments each other ever-so nicely. I like how it looks so old-worldly elegant, yet modern. Beautiful!
Those same sugarplum fairies seem to know how to dial in the sound too. I am exited for Tom to experience what it's like owning a Kinnaird. I LOVE mine... Did I just call Steve and Ryan fairies??? |
