They have it in the D15 model as well. That one really interests me. Only in the street master finish I can find, but I wonder if they’ll make it with the regular d15 finish.

Fascinating guitar, my favorite of the new Martins.

I'd be interested in the D15 as long as they have it without that streetmaster finish

The description says mahogany back and sides.

I'm sure many people feel the same, since they're still making the streetmasters. Personally, I'm just not a fan

My guess is that this guitar is aimed squarely at the Gibson J15.
I am betting it will be similarly priced. Not a spec for spec match but Martin's answer to Gibson's well received J model.
It will be interesting to see how Martin promotes it.

The MLO neck on the 17 is a show stopper for me. Now, the 15 Streetmaster is another story. I may give that a try. Not real crazy about the look but all the Streetmasters I’ve played sound fantastic for some reason.

Agree.

I read a quote from a Martin rep in another forum (or perhaps AGF) from a couple of years or so ago that Martin was using "Sipo" on their "solid mahogany" 15 series.

They use the same "mahogany" term for the B/S of the 17 series.

With the Standard series, OTOH, they use the term "genuine mahogany."

So my guess is that they are using Sipo because they appear to identify Sapele whenever they use it.

You didn't mention that this retails for only $1550 -- what a killer deal. Looks like the J-15 has got some competition!

Yup, and I'll throw the Larrivee SD-40 into the competition as well (although it's a 12-fret).

Three great but different slopes in that price range.

For me, it will be about how it sounds. If it sounds like the other 17's, it's a no go. If it sounds like a Dread Jr, that's good but I already have a Djr. If it sounds like a Ceo7, it's going home with me.

I would guess they will have braced these to fit within the 17 series tonal profile, which seems to lean toward a more dry, direct, and fundamental flavor, like the Waterloo guitars they’re clearly gunning for.

I actually think this is going to make for a really nice-sounding model with the larger slope-shoulder size — I expect it will sound somewhere between a Martin D-15 and a Gibson J-35.
