I live in Minnesota about three hours drive from Duluth. Once or twice a year we travel there for a weekend getaway. As soon as I see Lake Superior from the heights of Duluth the song Edmond Fitzgerald starts playing in my head and goes round and round. The words are good and the droning music is monotonous and addictive.

I'm also a sap for cello music! We had a cellist perform at our church a few weeks ago and yes, the music and the woody sound makes me emotional as well as certain songs as you folks have suggested.

I also find that I am more emotional about things as I age. I'm 67 yo and if I see a Boy Scout helping an old or handicapped person across the street I tear up. It seems like acts of good deeds really rip me up. Visiting with friends in my age group I guess this is a common emotion. I remember my dad being the same way.

Came the wreck of the Edmund Fitzgerald

and

In a musty old hall in Detroit they prayed,
In the maritime sailors' cathedral
The church bell chimed till it rang twenty-nine times
For each man on the Edmund Fitzgerald
I dont know how he played it live. I cant play it without feeling the lump and my wife refuses to let me play it when she's around.

I hate to admit this, but I was tearing up a lot more than I should admit too watching Bohemian Rhapsody. Lots of tears too for David Gilmore Live At Pompeii. Both of which I saw at the theater with my almost 80 year old father.

Good selections all.

For me, Jay Ungar's "Ashokan Farewell"

"From Rea Who Died Last Summer" by Diane Hildebrand

And there was a time when I was driving cross-country and was so emotionally wracked that I could not listen to anything without going up the wall. But then I thought of Enya and put "Watermark" on the CD player, and got an almost instant release. It was a cry, but a good cry.

I am very pleased that so many have felt comfortable enough to express things. I am a tiny bit surprised at how many have responded. There I go, assuming things again.

I am also delighted to have some music to look up, some mentioned are new to me.

Sometimes it's the lyrics, but often, it's the voice that gets me. Either the emotion in the voice, or the singer hitting a certain note that just pulls it out of you.

I posted this in another thread, but there's nothing that's touched me like the beautifully heart-breaking album by Mount Eerie, called "A Crow Looked At Me." Every track from that album can make me weep.

Another one, for me. I played this at a friend's wedding and could barely make it through.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aZbhrO4IEtI

Paul (of Peter, Paul and Mary) wrote and did its first public performance for the wedding of Peter. Paul refused to perform it in public for years. For me, it is one of the loveliest songs ever. It also has a profound back-story to it...

The sound of that 12-string is wonderful (tuned down 3 semi-tones).

It's a nice thread.
Another song that used to hit me was Dixie Chick's Traveling Soldier, especially that last verse.

I’ve always thought that a really good song breaks your heart a little each time you hear it.

Two that can get the tears flowing for me are:
Southern Accents by Tom Petty
No Hard Feelings by the Avett Brothers

First of all, it's a beautiful song. Secondly, she clearly puts her heart into it and...that voice!
Gets me going right out of the gate.
I could not agree more!! I have it on my iPhone after seeing it on YouTube! Totally breath-taking. Thanks for including it!
