Default The NFL Is Becoming Unwatchable

Is it just me amigos or has the NFL become one big foul call? I’ve been watching the Eagles and Cowboys going at it today and it literally seems like every other play there is a foul called for whatever reason. And the replays many times show the call dubious at best. The NFL Rules Committee has darn near ruined the game if you ask me. It’s really getting ridiculous out there. Good grief, let these guys play the game will ya refs?

That game was especially bad, but it's got a lot better since the first quarter of the year.

One reason is because the Eagles hire dummies. Second reason is many of the refs think the game is about them, and don't know the rules from play to play.

I wouldn't know. It has been two full years since I've watched more than five minutes of the NFL, including Super Bowls.

A big +1, and it's nothing new - haven't followed football in decades...

If one isn’t careful, between the commercial stoppages, penalty time-outs, and suspended play to deal with injuries, a game will sometimes break out.

I thought this was going to be about Dan Snyder's Washington Redskins!

The mentality of football fans never ceases to to amuse me... If the NFL is becoming "unwatchable", then why are you still watching, and wanting to talk even more about it, as if it were something that really mattered in life?

The NFL has a lengthy history of inspiring nothing but trouble. It's a total scam! How can a "non-profit" corporation, involving hundreds of millions of dollars be anything but a scam? The NFL promotes bully behavior, bad treatment of women, and scrambles the brains of kids trying to mimic the actions of their gridiron idols. Street gangs use NFL teams as a banner for their identities. The NFL is simply bad for America! Frankly, I wish it was an "off limits" subject, like politics, or the sub religion that it is! Aaah! I feel better now, just expressing my feelings about the NFL....

I think that there have been more good games this year than any season in recent memory. I just finished watching Rams vs Bears. That was a good game. Some might quibble that 6 Ints is just sloppy game play, but what I saw were two very good defenses and two very young quarterbacks being forced into errors. The Pats v Miami game was a great finish, the Browns/Pathers was a good game, and that is just this weekend.

There are a lot of penalties. But there are also a lot of new rules. No one can say that they understand the targeting rule, the rule concerning leading with your helmet or the roughing the passer rule. These are all new; players and refs will need time to adjust and game footage of calls to analyze.

These rule changes were at the center of one of the smartest holdouts in league history. Normally, I hate holdouts and find them useless, symbolic gestures of unmitigated greed. But Roquan Smith of the Bears held out because his contract stipulated that he would incur fines for violating these new rules. No one in the NFL could adequately explain to him how these penalties (and the resulting fines) would be administered, so he held out until the language concerning how and when the Bears could fine him was reworked. Smart move. Never sign a contract with terms you do not understand.

Check out the empty seats in stadiums across America, the TV ratings, the recent anthem antics and the race to the bottom for draft choices (The Detroit Lions lost that one too, dropping from 8th to 10th choice with a useless win). Not much to watch what with the time outs, play stoppage, commercial breaks ad nauseum. Thank God for remotes to click around and especially the "mute button"!

Pretty much. However, I attribute half the penalties to poor refereeing and half to sloppy gamesmanship. If you've been playing any game for 15 years (through pee-wee, Pop Warner, junior-high, high school, college....) you should have developed the ability to not hold, face-mask, block in the back... These have nothing to do with rules changes. Then when you add in the rules changes and guys are trying to modify behavior learned over 15 years, this contributes to some of the violations, or non-violations, if you look at the replays, and can see that that which was called clearly didn't happen. Because of the delays and commercials the game surly has become more tedious than it used to be. With these delays, many teams can't get into a rhythm and the penalties surge.

I think officials are scared that instant reply will prove them wrong so they over compensate.

Haven't watched the NFL for two years either. If you want to see continuous action try watching the Premier Soccer League. These guys play for 90 minutes, only time the action stops is for an injury.. No huddles, no stopping for penalties no BS. Just good constant action.

"Excessive Football! Thirty yards from the spot of the foul."

"Giving the quarterback a mean look! Fifteen yards from the spot of the glare."
