Default 11 archtops comparison

here's a thread on a greek musical forum where a friend plays the same tune, same amp, eq and all on 11 archtops (that he owns ). I enjoyed it, thought it might be fun to watch

Thanks for posting....the guy is fast...I have an Eastman 805 non cutaway all acoustic. I like the guitar a lot. Fun to hear various guitars compared that way.

Wow, that was awesome. I want to learn to play chord melodies like that, not necessarily for jazz though, is there a name for that style of playing?

Interesting to hear the different tone of each guitar... I believe the D"Angelico was my favorite, followed by the L-5 then a toss-up between the Sweet Sixteen and the 805CE...

Although obviously an accomplished player, he really didn't seem to capture the essence of that song at all... for my tastes, anyway.

Thanks for posting this...

My favorites were 1,11, and 3 in that order. I listened through AKG K-240's.

I think the other guitars sounded thin by comparison - especially the Eastmans.

It came down to the Super Eagle vs. the L-5 CES for me.I loved the warmth of the Super Eagle. The L-5 CES had a bit more clarity and was plenty warm. The same goes for the #3, the Golden Eagle.

Choosing between #3 and #11 would be tough if I went by tone alone. But of all 3, side-by-side, I'd choose the Super Eagle.

That guy is an awesome player, BTW and this was a worthwhile comparison.

I hope he's on Heritage's Christmas card list!

Thanks man. I don't know much as a want to about archtops but when I'm ready to try some, I going to reach for floating pickups first. Beautiful!

Rather than agreeing or disagreeing with you (personal taste is what I hear you expressing), I do want to comment that he is playing a real tune, rather than just noodling a few mindless licks as I see in so many demo videos of pedals. It seems that so few guitar players actually play a tune. Most seem to favor licks (or maybe don't know any real tunes). Walk into any guitar shop and this frequently seems to be the case. If a non-musician asks a guitar player to "play something for me", how many can really play a tune? But they can all bang on a chord or a pentatonic lick.

Edit: After listening to the demos of the 11 instruments, I think #11 is the best to my ears. However, that said, his touch, the amp he is playing through and its settings, strings used - all contribute to the sound. I have to admit that listening to demos like this, I come away with a deeper appreciation of my 1974 Gibson Johnny Smith through my Henricksen head and 8" cabinet because these seem to produce the sound I want to hear. I would MUCH rather have that than 11 other instruments.

Good comment. Besides, criticizing the guy's playing in a thread about comparing the tones of different guitars is, in my opinion, gratuitous.

I'll have to try to watch more of it. I was only able to make it through 2 clips before the wife had plans for me.
