Oddly enough, my epiphany came in the electric guitar realm. I was a committed Fender fan; no Squiers for me, Bud. Then, one day I came upon a G&L (Leo Fender's actual last guitar company) and the sound and the build quality -- at a price that would put Fender to shame -- made me rethink "brand loyalty." Now, it's all about the sound/tone.

Yeah, I'm pretty impressed with the two I now have. I've always been curious about them and finally pulled the trigger on the first one about a month ago.

John McQuarrie, Northwood Guitars. I have a mini-jumbo, EIR/spruce. It’s the best guitar I own, or have ever played.

I was hooked on a Martin 000-15M for most of my playing life (close to 40 years now), but played sporadically while raising kids, working, etc... I bought a used Gibson Songwriter about 4 years ago, right after retirement. I was playng a lot more and improving. The Gibson felt better to my hands, easier to play. It was set up similar to my Martin, but I liked the sound better and like I said it seemed easier to play well. I sold the 000 and bought several more Gibsons looking for that "perfect" guitar, and exploring different sounds. I also bought a couple of other used Martins, a D28 and D35, but ended up selling them eventually. I'm not a complete Gibson convert but there's only one Martin with me now. However, recently I discovered a couple of Waterloo Jumbo Kings, and fear I may be easing down that rabbit hole....

For me it was RainSong
I picked up a RainSong WS-1000N2 and the one thing that made me buy it on the spot was the rich full treble tone that this gave me - and in that regard specifically it was better than ANY wood guitar I had ever played for the unwound strings. Little did I know when I picked this up that it would be one of the catalysts for me to completely turnover my modest collection. 48 hours after acquiring the RainSong I sold 2 out of the 3 Nazareth made Martins I owned at the time, a 28 series and 15 series guitars. Only my Gruhn exclusive sinker 0000-18 stood up to the RainSong - it didn't have the rich treble tone of the Rainsong but it had this gorgeous midrange that the RainSong just couldn't match. Over the next couple of weeks I was playing the WS-1000N2 and my 0000-18 sinker, and although the RainSong clearly had the better tone on the unwound strings, I began to notice that the midrange was not only clearly better on the Martin, I was beginning to dislike it on the RainSong - this has a very mid-forward EQ, and although it was still a very full tone, it certainly lacked warmth - I tried Retro strings and it didn't help. The RainSong honeymoon was definitely over. I've since sold the WS-1000N2 and replaced it with the RainSong Nashville jumbo, and now have an Emerald X30 to go along with it. But I credit all of this to RainSong - I'm one of the few players who fell in love with carbon fiber for the tone first and foremost. To date a total of 4 Nazareth made Martins have been sold as a result of my newfound love for CF - if this isn't a change in religion, I don't know what is.

Hear nothing but good things about Northwood guitars. Always wanted one of his deep body 000's. I always hear great things about his SJ's...

The neck on the D-18A 1937 and the 000-18A 1937 (both of which I owned) are the best that Martin has ever carved, IMO. Full sized C to soft V. Glad to have experienced both of those great Martins. Hope you enjoy yours
