Default Guitars that shine in open tunings

So which guitars have really come alive in alternate tunings in your experience?

Lowden and McIlroy have always had a reputation for doing well in alternate tunings. Since I own one of each I haven’t found anything to change my mind.

I have an A-sized Avalon that loves DADGAD (yellow cedar and walnut). Surprisingly, I also have an inexpensive Art and Lutherie 12 String (spruce and laminated cherry) that also sounds inspirationally beautiful in DADGAD.

My Lowden really comes alive with DADGAD. I need to learn more about the tuning to make the most of it.

By comparison my Gibson shines in standard tuning.

All of my all solid wood and my Seagull folk also sounds good in DADGAD and lower tunings. What accents the tone is using medium strings on the guitars I keep in the lower tunings - Avalon, Furch, Guild, Larrivee and Seagull.

I am just beginning to explore open tunings, so I am definitely not an expert. So far, every guitar that sounds good to me in standard also sounds good in an open tuning. But I think rosewood guitars, and particularly rosewood OM’s and 000’s “really come alive” in open tunings.

My McIlroy A30c (Rosewood/Sitka) is always in DADGAD or some variant. Simply luscious sounding!

Guitars that shine in open tunings

I'd like to think that any guitar I've put through it's paces and brought home will sound good to me no matter the tuning.

That said, I've had some luck with that, but I doubt I'd ever go through the 'heard' and re-tune each of them to find out. Defining 'open tunings' as anything not standard and not simply dropped a semitone or two or dropped D'ed, I've had good luck with resulting sounds from open tuned instruments.

My 12 strings are normally tuned down a semitone to D#. I currently have my Taylor 355 12 string tuned to C#Keltic (tuned to what would be DADGAD but starting from D# tuning) and my Taylor 512ce tuned to DADGAD. Both sound great in open tuning, and the standard scale 512ce benefits from using Elixir PB HD Lights (.013 - .053), which adds .001 to the treble E and B strings, somewhat gauge-compensating for tuning those two strings down.

Also haven't had a problem simply open tuning to a chord, like up to open E or down to open D (E shape) in the past. And any 12 string funniness would only be tuned down, never up. Thus to turn that C# DADGAD 12 string into open C# tuning, I would only need to tune the G strings down a semitone from F# to F. (C# G# C# F G# C#.)

Don

My Lowden definetly shines in different tunings, but I'm interested in trying out Jon Gomm's new Ibanez signature.

I’ve just started exploring alternate tunings. They were not even a consideration when I purchased the guitars I own.

My Martin 00-28VS sounds amazing in DADGAD. I ve been working on a couple tunes and sent my instructor a short video for critique. He made some suggestions and finished his message with, “Don’t ever sell that guitar.”[emoji846]

My Larrivee L09 shines in alternate tunings and is almost always in C, DADGAD, G, or dropped D
