Collings truss rod adjustment tool?
Does anyone know where I can get a collings adjustment tool?
I've tried using a ball end wrench and angle it but it doesn't seem to work |

A 5/32 ball end, used thus, is what they recommend. The angle must be hard to achieve. |

It is tough to adjust with ball-end wrench at an angle.
I use normal L-shape wrench and insert it perpendicularly. |

Call Collings and they will mail you one. That's how I got mine.

The Larrivee tool will work, you just need to get the right one since there are two sizes.

Using a 5/32" ball end hex wrench (like in the illustration above) it is tough to get a good alignment into the truss rod nut (at least on my C10).
Bent the last inch of the wrench up (away from the ‘L’ shape) by about 15 degrees. I used a vise and heavy hammer to bend the wrench. Works without a problem now.

Collings makes a fine guitar, but their recommendation to use ball-end hex wrenches for the truss rod perplexes me. The engagement between the ball-end and the truss rof nut is very small, and very easy to strip.
The best tool I found was the "old" Larrivee truss rod tool, the one with the sharp bends in it rather than the big curve. I think John Arnold recommended it to me here on AGF, and it worked perfectly.

I purchased an extra long... really long one at a tool store... took it home and heated it with a torch and bent it like the larrivee tool.... works just fine

I agree that it is very easy to strip. I use this instead (5/32") on my Collings, by inserting the short end. Nothing fancy. Last edited by fulfillingsoul; 09-27-2015 at 07:30 AM. |
