David Olney has long been one of my favorite songwriters. I am constantly amazed by the varied perspectives he brings to his songs. A song about the Titanic - from the iceberg's point of view; a song in the voice of the donkey Jesus rode into Jerusalem; John Barrymore remembering his glory days from a barroom stool; Robert Ford recounting why he shot Jesse James... I could go on and on.
I was fortunate enough to see him in person a few years ago. I was disappointed to see how small an audience turned out to see him play. But he gave those of us who were there an excellent performance and was very gracious when I shook his hand afterwards. I have 13 of his CD's. Now I'm thinking I need to get the rest, seeing as there won't be any more. RIP David. Those of us who knew you, however briefly are the richer for it.

found his beautiful tribute song playing the piano with string accompanyment. Have spent about two hours this morning learning more about him. We were the same age and both born in Rhode Island. Kind of an eerie feeling. |
