Man on a Mission

Got a lot of stuff done yesterday afternoon, and I'll try to get some better pics sometime this weekend. Sanded the FB to radius, Fret markers installed, jack hole drilled, jack plate finished, and frets on. I still need to install the side markers and dress the fret ends, but it really looks like a guitar now.

I did the fret markers with a walnut plug surrounded by rosewood sawdust mixed with CA

I'd originally just wanted to do the walnut marker, but my plug cutter cut slightly smaller than 1/4" so I had to fill the gap.

Here's the jack plate finished and installed

And lastly, another mock up

Very cool, Roger! I'm enjoying this thread a lot.

Any chance you could give us a clearer shot of the fretboard markers? I'm kinda curious about the look of the walnut w/ rosewood dust.
Cheers!

Thanks a lot, Kyle. I'll do my best to get some clearer shots later this weekend. I'm actually out of town right now.

Here you go, Kyle. Here is a better close-up of one of the fret markers. There are some gaps on some of the markers where maple dust has collected after sanding the fb to radius, and not all of the outer rosewood rings are uniform, but I really like the over all look.

After a great weekend at my 20th high school reunion, I got home today to dress my fret ends. After not looking at the guitar all weekend, I noticed that my fret installing technique definitely needs more work, as does my fret end dressing technique. Hopefully I'll get better at that on the next couple of builds

Still left on my punch list: Drill string-through body holes, carve neck, finish bridge, apply finish (probably wipe on poly), install electronics, install string ferrules, install tuners, fret level, make nut, install string trees, and set up.

Thanks Roger. Very cool! I like the look as well. Keep up the good work.

Nice thread! My only critique is I could see my old wood shop teacher freaking out with the plane attached to the high power sander-envisioning that plane blade accelerating to 80 MPH... brilliant build though.

After a long weekend away from building (at least it felt long), I was able to get quite a bit accomplished last night and this evening. First up was dressing fret ends. Let's just say that my fret work needs work. But I got it done and then started on carving the neck. I went at it with a rasp, files, and sandpaper, and after about 2 hours I was done. In keeping with the theme of the guitar, the neck is a little...ummm...rustic .

Anyway, on to the pics

It's looking great so far! I don't know if it's been said but this one would look great with bullet shell control knobs.

I don't know if shotguns are really used in the military but something similar to this with some commonly used military shells would be cool.

Default Cartridge Case Knobs

Some 45 acp or 308 cartridges cut down for your volume and tone controls would fit right in with your military theme.
