The Ultimate List of Online Learning Resources
I'm still at home from covid distancing and pretty bored. I'm looking to pick up my guitar and actually devote some time to learning instead of casually playing songs here and there.
What are the best online resources for learning guitar? Preferably free, but looking for ones with some structure over random YouTube links to keep me focused. I thought it would be great for the community to put together an ultimate list of learning resources for newbies. I'll kick it off with a few sites with lessons that looked reputable: - aimusiclessons.com: this site's free and has the books I used to use when I took private lessons. Looks like it listens to you as you play and gives you tips and feedback on your playing which is pretty cool. - yousician.com: same kind of thing as aimusiclessons but looks more like a video game. Paid site. Looks like the free trial requires a CC. Looks OK. - fender play: cheaper than yousician but doesn't have the interactive listening/feedback thing. Has lots of songs though, but I can get those elsewhere on the web for free. - guitartricks.com: looks like they've been around a while but more expensive than fender play and looks like the same thing. - justinguitar.com: someone on reddit mentioned this. I tried learning from YT before and ... it didn't go well. But apparently his website provides some structure to the videos instead of just a random stream of suggested videos? Has anyone tried any of these? Are there ones I'm missing that you would recommend? |

http://www.truefire.com - some of the best video lessons out there IMHO, but also a good bit of mediocre content
http://artistworks.com - interesting format - recorded video lessons and video exchanges, some high-profile teachers |

https://www.littletobywalker.com Toby is a sponsor here on AGF and has taught many AGF members in the art of fingerstyle. Over the years, his repertoire has blossomed and he must have several hundred lessons available for all levels. Toby makes it a point to get to know his student\customers and is very quick to answer emails. Toby has a subscription service, individual lessons, and does Skype lessons. There’s a reason that I mention him first as he has been my prime influence in guitar journey.
https://www.activemelody.com Brian splits his time between electric and acoustic on this site. His format is a little different than most. He presents a lesson and plays it for free. But, if you want the tab, the backing tracks and the breakdown, there is a charge. He goes fast in his explanations, but the lessons are well produced and thorough. https://www.homespun.com Homespun was started out many moons ago by Happy Traum as a print catalog selling VHS lessons. As you can guess, the lessons are now downloadable. The lessons are very professional and the catalog has artists like Jorma Kaukonen, Doc Watson, and Thom Bresh (and Toby Walker! See above). https://www.guitarvideos.com Stefan Grossman’s website is in many ways a mirror of Happy Traum’s site. They have a great overlap in their catalogs, and yet both remain unique.
