Dick Rosmini's 1953 Martin D-28 12-String
1953 Martin D-28. Serial # 132201. Converted to a 12-string by Candelas Guitars circa 1960/1961. Purchased by Dick from him in 1961. This is the only 12-string used on any of the Rosmini recordings as both artist for the Elektra and Imperial labels and as a side man/session player. Dick can be heard playing it on the “Black Stallion” & “Leadbelly” soundtracks and on numerous recording dates from the ‘60’s through the late ‘80’s. The pickguard, individual saddle pieces, & some tuning knobs were made by Dick after he acquired the guitar.

Dick Rosmini was a regular at McCabe's guitar shop in the 1960's when I was hanging out there. Sadly he passed away too young. He was a wonderful 12 string guitarist. Many who were later to make names in the music business were McCabe's "hangees" in that era; Fred Gerlach, Ry Cooder, Taj Mahal and Linda Ronstadt to name a few.
He also owned a 1950's 00-21 at one point. Unfortunately, he forgot and left it behind his car in his garage one day and backed over it and flattened the case and the guitar. I saw the broken guitar on the workbench there. I bought the nice ivory nut from that guitar for $5.00 from the now owner, Bob Riskin, and I swapped it for the plastic one that came on my 1968 00-21. I still have it and the guitar, too. LOL. McCabe's converted three 00-21's to 12 strings around the time that I was taking lessons there. Also, I saw a D-28S that had been converted to a 12 string by their shop. I was told that C.F. Martin III used that idea as a prototype for the D-12-20's. I later bought my D-12-35 at McCabe's in June of 1965. I have a lletter from C.F. Martin that mentions that it was the first one sold commercially and the second one made. McCabe's was the place to go for a Martin guitar in that period. The 12 string in the pictures looks really interesting. Thanks for posting that. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dick_Rosmini |
