Help! Taylor getting flaky.
My Taylor 314 of 12-ish years is starting to flake apart in one spot. The situation is not dire, but it is getting worse the more often I play. My initial thought is to sand the area down and re-finish it, but I have never done anything like that before on a guitar. So really I have no idea. I can't figure out how to attach photos, but can email them to whoever may have an answer.
Any and all advice is appreciated! Thanks, Philip |

By your description I presume you mean the finish is separating.
I've seen that happen. Do not try fixing this yourself. Finishing takes a special set of materials, tools, and skills. And Taylor uses a complex finish material. Contact them - if you are the original owner they may fix this free for you.

Good advice above...
Taylor use a UV cured finish which is very tricky to patch without the specialist equipment they have access to.
I’m a guitar making student and wouldn’t tackle this type of finish repair. Small dings and chips can sometimes be filled successfully with superglue, but the result won’t be perfect and a degree of skill is necessary. Taylor will do finish repairs either at the factory or there are some Taylor authorised finish repairers. Contact Taylor directly for advice. |

If you can access the area of delamination, you can inject some super glue to make it adhere again, it’s most prevelant around plastic binding areas where the wood and binding contract at different rates and or an impact may have occured.

one came in this morning, 13yr old uv.
Like any finish be it Nitro, Poly, UV, Acrylic, its not a forever thing and is always subject to damage from weather and other issues. Two options for repair, One Super glue the loose edges back down, then sand and fill or Remove and refinish the whole headstock

I might as well add that CA glue comes in different viscosities. You want the thin bottle. Some hobby shops carry it, might be the easiest way to get some.

Could you explain your process?
I’d be interested to know exactly how you did this repair. Presumably you removed the old finish first?

Very useful information. Thank you.
Great step-by-step explanation of the process. UV cured finished have some considerable advantages but need some specialist (presumably expensive) equipment.
Many thanks for responding, Nick |

I can pm it to you (you need to clean your inbox, it’s full), the forum rules disallow links to commercial websites.

Well, the rules don't disallow commercial links, but we don't allow businesses to link to their own site unless they are sponsors. So, thanks for doing this, Steve.
Nik and Joe, Steve's site has a lot of helpful stuff. You'll enjoy. |

Thanks Kerbie,
Apologies for the misunderstanding, no business links unless your a sponsor. My walk throughs are hosted by my business website, I as a non sponsor cannot link them, which is fair. One day I will look into the sponsor ship, but I’m not after business or work as I cannot keep up with what I have already, and upset customers as it is with some delays. Steve

A big field exists for anyone who wishes to get into repair.
This was my worksheet Thursday morning. I go around and write down the authorised jobs, so I can plan my day out. Steve
