If I had to pick one, it would be "Machine Gun" - Jimi Hendrix

"Alfie" is an amazing song. Burt always said it was the best lyric Hal ever wrote.

Paul Simon is an incredible songwriter. You could throw a dart and hit any of a dozen or more of his songs and still be on the mark in this thread.

However, my absolute favorite song of his is "Hearts & Bones." It's about his relationship with Carrie Fisher. Maybe I love it so much because I discovered it so late, many years after it was recorded. What a song. (It's also one's of Paul's favorites too.)

I don't think that's a song. It's an experience.

I had to rapidly remove the Stairway link from the quote. For me that is a very very hard pass. I worked in a guitar store when it came out, and after. I can not tell you how many guys came in and "played" it. Most of them, badly. Sometimes painfully badly. Very few went beyond that (shudder) opening bit. I don't think I ever heard anyone playing beyond maybe a minute.

If I never hear it again would be too soon.

It is impossible to pick one, but if I had to get it down to two: the original Layla, and Jimi Hendrix's All Along the Watchtower.

OR,

Jesse Winchester The Brand New Tennessee Waltz, Bruce Cockburn If I Had A Rocket Launcher

Sure dating myself...

I'd have to go with Don McLean's American Pie. The melody and lyrics of that song are amazing.
