Default 1997 Santa Cruz Model F - Roy McAlister SOLD

SOLD off forum.

The "F" model is a very special guitar among the aficionados of the Santa Cruz line. According to an email I received from Santa Cruz Guitars, Roy McAlister, famed luthier and builder had a hand in building this guitar. These older SC guitars are wonderful instruments, taking nothing away from their current line of course.

Approaching a quarter century in age, the woods have stabilized and opened up beautifully. The Sitka top appears to be of old-growth showing very tight grain and liquid-looking silk (hard to capture in a photo). The full-spectrum tone and playability are superb.

From the Santa Cruz website:The F Model’s intent is versatility. Recording, performing and composing with picks or nails on the same instrument is a necessity for many of us. When your repertoire also demands full dynamics from subtle to bold, you needn’t settle nor compromise on your presentation if you have the proper tool. Our ability to control the EQ of the F is the secret to avoiding boominess, while maintaining impressive acoustic volume and giving an articulate voice to finger-style playing and open tunings. The F Model is a favorite of performing songwriters.

My Take: Articulate, balanced and very easy and comfortable to play. Great volume and plays well with others. Condition is excellent with only a few very minor finish marks as shown in the photos. No neck issues and the setup is just right to me.

Top: Sitka
Back and sides: Indian Rosewood
Neck shape: Medium C
Nut: 1.72" (1-23/32")
1st/9th frets: .82"/.92"
String spacing at saddle: 2.25"
String spacing at nut: 1.495"
Pickup: Baggs I-Beam (active with vol control)

The F model is a wonderful general all-around guitar - and I love the older ones. This one looks fantastic. If you want to validate the McAllister connection, look on the underside of the top for the name of the person who voiced it - wouldn’t matter who it is, but it’s cool when you find one signed by Roy -

Thanks, Tadol. Unfortunately, no one signed the underside of the top. The only thing I have to validate Roy's involvement is an email which I'll happily share with anyone who'd like to see it. Sure is a nice guitar and the top has Roy's innovative slight arch to it that he is known for.

The neck feels great. The nut is 1-23/32" putting it halfway between a 1-11'16" and 1'-3/4". Personally I can't feel that 1/32" difference in this and most of my other 1-3/4" guitars because of the depth. My Gibson AJ had a 1-3/4" nut that felt much smaller that the SC so I sold it.

It's all about the carve and not the number IMHO.
