I don't get into all that "best" stuff... for me, music is not a competition until it becomes business...
That said, I have absolutely loved and appreciated Pat Metheny's music (in every format in which he's evolved!) since the 70's... I was in a band with a recent Berklee graduate... pretty standard format for rock/blues/etc.: 2 guitars, piano, bass drums. The pianist had just graduated from Berklee with very high honors in harmony and composition (6th level, Dean's List?), and he wante to give all of us an example of group dynamics... So he put on that first Pat Metheny Group album, the white one... my God! I was stunned at how that group played together; rising and falling in intensity, stopping on a dime (and giving 8 cents change!) and starting again... simply a tour-de-force in ensemble playing to my ears... I love Pat's sense of melody and harmony... and, although he does resort to "licks" occasionally, mostly, his soloing is pure and moving... I can't think of another guitarist who also writes such evocative music, in so may different group landscapes... I really like his "Orchestrion" stuff, too... visually stunning, to watch the DVD, and the songs are really solid, really good - not just "showing off' what the construct can do, but melodic and meaningful... Pat is one of my favorites, without a doubt. In 100 years, they will remember him...

I made the blessed mistake of listening to the"The Way Up" CD on a rather high volume setting...there is a standard and then there is sometimes a CD that is off any standard scale, if that makes any sense. This is one of those CDs. I agree OP, an appreciation!

I've listened to Pat Metheny from his first album onward, and seen him a half-dozen times. In addition to his awesome musicality, he's also a really super-positive presence. I don't think "best" means anything, so I'll just say he's a wonderful musician with awesome chops, inventiveness, expression....

Haven't listened to him in a long time...too long.
I forgot how great his music is. My favorite album is Still Life (Talking). I just finished listening to it for the first time in over 10 years. Thanks for reminding me! |

One of the great blessings of my life is to be about the same age as Pat, so I've been aware of him for most of his long career. More than just being my favorite guitarist, he's my favorite composer and bandleader. The jazz musicians I follow are usually ones I discovered playing with him. It's gotten to the point where I have one full bookshelf or CDs of Pat's projects, one of all other jazz artists, and two of everything else.
Still, I don't think Pat gets enough appreciation, in the US, anyhow. More to come... |

I will have to take a listen again to some of his acoustic work. Recommendations? Always nice to hear a tasteful player. His electric work, however, gets a tad noodly and has never been my cup of tea (saw him live in the mid 80s). Guess losing interest in 4 minute guitar solos is part of me becoming a fully validated old fart! On the other hand, this still brings a smile to my face all these decades later:

The Pat Metheny cd One Quiet Night is a solo acoustic guitar album recorded
at his home studio on a baritone guitar built for him by Linda Manzer. I think his tuning is nashville. With one guitar and one microphone Pat creates a work of art. The DVD Pat Metheny Group: Imaginary Day Live is a great evening of music. The song Across the Sky is my favorite. Pat is a Master. http://www.dailymotion.com/video/xx1...day-live_music |

Pat Metheny was the first artist who really got my attention on solo jazz acoustic & electric guitar. The first album of his I got was New Chautaqua and it blew me away (that was in 1978). I don't think I have ever experienced a musician who composes music that is so rich and textured even though it can get a bit too improv for my ears at times. Secret Story and his duet album with Charlie Haden Beyond the Missouri Sky are two works that I can put headphones and listen to complete from start to finish.
One of the songs I am working on currently is A Map of the World. I'd like to take on some other Metheny compositions in the future. He's a gem we should all appreciate.
