Back to 80/20 on my SJ-200
For the last year I had used various bands PB strings on this guitar. Since it is not my most played guitar I did not pay a lot of attention to the sound.
Recently, last 2 months, I find I play it a lot. But no matter what, it did not sound great. I was worried that something had changed in the wood. I picked up some new Martin PB strings a few weeks ago hoping that new strings would do the trick. Put them on and had the same sound. Just sounded like dead strings when they were obviously new. So......I put on a new set of Elixer 80/20 like I use on my D-41 and 914c. WOW!!! IT'S ALIVE!!! All the sound of the SJ was back. Loud and in your face, but with the famous Gibson sweetness. Well, I have to get back to playing. But, just thought I comment on what a HUGE difference string composition makes on a specific guitar. After 55 years of playing, great tone still inspires me1

I super agree with this. Even the brand of string seems to make a difference in my experience, along with the composition and gauge. And each guitar is different.
Tommy Emmanuel has even said that his guitars "get used" to a particular string type over time, and therefore he switches brands and string type in order to retrieve the tones that have gone missing from the guitar after too much time with the same kind of strings. Personally, I don't believe this (I'm an annoying "show me the empirical evidence" guy), but the point is that strings totally matter.

I remember the advent of the 80/20 Elixirs polywebs. I used them on my Koa guitar. They make guitars sound dramatic.
Then 5 years later the tide seemed to switch to PB nanowebs. I have used them on Gibson rosewoods ever since. I like non coated, woody sounding brands on my Gibson mahogany's. Nice to see it go back to 80/20's. I have them scheduled up next on my Goodall GC Sitka/Koa. I hope it will revive the old dramatic feeling from years back.
