Reaper issue
I’ve been using Reaper, with a Focusrite Scarlett 2i2 interface and AKG P 170 mic, for about a year. I use the rig mainly to critique my own fingerstyle work, and have also made a couple of multitrack backings for a singer friend. Everything was great until a few days ago when I laid down a simple track, and the playback sounded horrible! Tinny, distorted, almost unrecognizable. I checked and ALL of my previous Reaper projects had the same problem, although the .wav files I had created from them still sounded OK. Reaper Help was no help and the only suggestion from the users forum was rebooting Reaper, which did not work.
Any thoughts? I’m stumped.

If the problem exists on tracks that were previously okay, I think the fault it more likely with your interface than with your DAW.

First thing, unplug your interface, delete the driver files, and download new drivers. Install them, plug in the interface.
I assume if you load a WAV file into Reaper, it too sounds bad. Your monitors (speakers) are plugged into the interface, correct?

I'm guessing the rendered/bounced files sound Ok, but not when playing back tracks, i.e., a "mix" within the DAW?
As suggested, I'd check that something (e.g., OS update) hasn't caused the drivers to get out of whack, and unplug/power down the interface, download the latest drivers, then plug the interface back in (with no s/w running) and reinstall the drivers. Confirm all the s/w is installed and configured correctly and then start the DAW, and insure it's settings/preferences are correct.

Thanks for all your replies, reinstalling the 2i2 drivers makes sense, I will try that today.
This forum is an amazing resource.m

I played the .wav files through the PC’s music app, not through Reaper.

Ah, So you bounced/exported them to the computer ... Ok then I would guess it is something has changed in either the routing in the DAW, or some unintended selection in the DAW , playback samples etc ? . Or as suggested something in the interface drivers

Belated thanks
I finally got around to this (live intervened) and all of you who suggested I might be barking up the wrong tree were exactly correct. I reinstalled the 2i2 drivers and things are working now, exactly as they should.
Thanks again for your suggestions and thoughtful input.
