Default DADGAD Resources

I play mainly in standard tuning, but I'd like to learn how to play in DADGAD. Can anyone recommend some resources (books, videos, etc.) to get started with? Thanks.

Hi Ray,

I found Al Petteway's instructional DVDs to be good. This one is a good example, but he has several.

Also, Doug Young, who is active on the AGF, has written an excellent book called "Understanding DADGAD" and it's a great resource. He also has some excellent compositions included in the book with TAB.

I hope this is helpful.

I don't have this book by Doug Young, but I have his Christmas dadgad book and he is also very helpful here on AGF so you probably can't go wrong with his Understanding DADGAD book.

Also, many of Al Petteway's tunes on his website are in DADGAD, but his playing is a different flavor from most people who play in DADGAD.

Al sells many of his tabs for $5 a piece on his website. You might want to take a look at his Sligo Creek.

Another possibility is Artie Traum. He has a series of 3 instructional DVDs on DADGAD.

I can vouch for Doug’s book - I have one. I particularly found the section on how to map your existing standard tuning knowledge of chords to dadgad particularly useful. He also goes into intervals in dadgad which is also useful for arranging.

"It is killer. All D's. Very modal. Very open."

Thanks for your suggestions, everyone. I've been noodling around in DADGAD for about a week now and I'm really enjoying it. I think a more structured approach would help me to better understand its potential.

That is hilarious! I'm going to tune to DADBAD just to try it out.

Doug Young's book is a great introduction to DADGAD. Highly recommend.

Default Alternate tuning book

Here's a book by Mark Hanson on altered tunings in general. There's more to explore than just DADGAD. No songs here but it covers a lot of tunings and shows chords in each tuning for you to play around with.

https://www.amazon.com/Complete-Alte...5&sr=8-1-fkmr0

Mark Hanson also has a DVD lesson disc on alternate tunings with a pamphlet size book with the TABS for each song demonstrated. The song Drakes Passage is a beautiful song in DADGAD which is one of my favorites to play.

Lawrence Juber plays almost exclusively in DADGAD and has both books and video on how to play in this wonderful alternate tuning.

If you want to really go outside the box, try learning some Hawaiian slack key tunings. I'd start with taro patch tuning which some call open G.

Good luck!

If you're just getting into alternate tunings you might consider open D as well. It's the same but the G is tuned to F#. So DADF#AD. It gives you a major chord when strummed open instead of a minor sounding chord.
Playing slide got me into open tunings. In my opinion it's a road worth going down.
