Default A couple of mixes

Hi guys,

I just wondered if you guys would be good enough to give me a couple of critiques on a couple of songs i have mixed, just for fun.

My goal was to get better at mixing, so I have taken a couple of popular pop tunes and tried to recreate them.

The only real instruments used are acoustic guitar, electric guitar, and vocals. The rest of what you hear are software instruments.

I have tried reading a few books on recording and also found some great info on the web. But I have found that just getting your hands dirty, digging in and trial and error will hopefully get you there in the end.

It's taken me about a year to get to what you hear today. I was a total novice until a year ago it's been hard work fun and very frustrating to say the least.

I thought I would ask first before I posted anything because I know this is an acoustic guitar Forum. I have posted a couple of solo acoustic guitar performances here and got some great feedback early last year.

Gear used:

Logic pro 8.
focusrite: track Master pro.
RME: Fireface 400
AKG: 414
Addictive drums
ESX24: Sampler.

I would really like to know what you guys think

Thanks once again.

John.

overall, they are both very well done. if you wanted to specifically break things down, that might be different. a mix is a aural fingerprint--if you will--and i hear yours in both of these songs.

one generic thing i'd consider (not a critique, i'd just add as a suggestion) is maybe bringing the lead vox back a bit, to give the instruments a little more room. even for vocalist centric work, they are mixed way out in front. the delay tail on the female voc is a little too much too.

and i'd find a way to get a little more in both of these above the 1.5 k level.

but again, they sound fine and are very well done. they are very good pop mixes, very centrally focused and tight.

dmoss74,

Thanx so much for taking the time to post. Just what i needed.

I have to agree, the vox do sound a bit to loud. This is way more apparent when listening on smaller speakers or in the car etc.

They sound fine in the studio through the KRKs. I think i need to invest in some room correction? Been putting it off for way to long :-)

I plan to learn a bit about mastering over the next six months or so. I should be able to pump the volume a few dbs and polish them off a bit more.

I still enjoy listing to them. Loads to learn and i look forward to learning more over the years.

Thanx again for taking the time to post.

John
