Default 1990 Taylor 910 Custom?

Hey everyone. I'm new to guitars, have been playing for about 2 months and have bought a few since then. Today I picked up a 1990 Taylor 910 for $1700, from an old retired Dr. on Cape Cod. I brought it by my guitar instructors place tonight and he tells me it's a Custom Taylor with Brazilian Rosewood sides/back and an Adirondack spruce top. Any idea the rough value on this guitar? I did some research but couldn't really find any that were similar, and I'm a newbie, so maybe I don't know what I'm looking for exactly. Below are some pictures.

$1700 is most likely a great deal.

Here's a similar one on reverb (1990 Taylor 910).

The $3500 asking price isn't the necessarily the same as what it will sell for. But $1700 for any 900 series Taylor is a great find, and it looks to be in great condition based on your photos. I'd suggest emailing Taylor with the serial number and confirm the build specs (i.e. wood used, etc).

Your pics aren't showing up for me - no way to tell if his assessment of Adi/Braz is accurate - although I'd never seen or heard of Taylor using Adirondack tops in that era.

I found a way to open your pics up - definitely not Brazilian - East Indian rosewood, and either Sitka or Engelmann top. Very nice instrument for sure and a pretty good deal you got there!

jwilbur11... welcome to the AGF! Glad to have you. You might want to take a look at this post on how to post pics. You appeared to be posting page locations, but they won't work within the image tags. You need the jpeg image locations. Let me know if you need any help.

The 900 series Taylors were made with their highest grade rosewood and engleman spruce. That back wood is just beautiful. I can sorta see why your instructor thought it might be brazilian and adi. The pronounced color variation in the wood grain of the back is characteristic of brazilian. However the wood grain looks to straight to be brazilian. EIR is more straight than brazilian. The top has some dark streaks running down the length. That is why he thinks it is adirondack. The 900 series Taylors have very tight grain engleman that appears almost white and very even with no color contrast or streaks. As it ages, the top will get darker. The adirondack top guitars that I have the grain is not as tight as the engleman. I cannot see the grain pattern in the pictures as well in the top. But those dark streaks in the top make it not look like engleman. I believe it might be a custom adi top although I have never seen a Taylor with an adi top. The back is a very high grade of EIR.

I much prefer the look of the 900 series guitars from back then (1990's). Very tasteful and not so blinged out like they are now (just my opinion).
Beautiful guitar!

Yep, a very nice find. Congrats.

I didn’t know that Taylor’s of that era had a scarf headstock joint. Seems strange that they’d depart from that to a finger joint for many years, only to return to the scarf many years later.

Default Update on Tonewoods

Thank you for all of your replies. I spoke with Taylor a few days ago and they sent me to a guy they said was their top Luthier. He is in Exeter NH, which is only a couple hours from me. I saw him today and he confirmed that it is Indian Rosewood with an Englemann top, not Brazilian. You guys were right. It is in Mint condition, so that's a plus. Apparently my instructor is a great teacher, but not so good on species identification. haha

Stunning guitar and a great find from the "golden era". You probably paid roughly what he did all those years ago. That is roughly what I paid for Martin J-40 in 1990. To me, not being BRW is a plus - not so expensive.

And e komo mai (welcome in Hawaiian).
