What was the guitar that happily surprised you the most.
We all buy guitars that underwhelm or surprise us after purchase. What is the guitar you purchased that most pleasantly surprised you - after purchase? Of all my purchases the guitar that continues to surprise me with my enjoyment of playing and listening to it is my Goodall RGC (Rosewood Grand Concert). It is simply a pleasure to play and has become my #1 performance guitar. Remember, no negatives. Just positive surprises beyond expectations.

My new Emerald. I was prepared to send it back if necessary since I couldn't find one to play first. But I just can't put it down. Looking forward to my next one, in a harp guitar version. I have betrayed my wooden brethren lol

My Martin 00015SM. I just didn’t expect such richness in tone ( I know not very descriptive). It’s the sound i’ve unknowingly been looking for.

Eastman E20p - A wonderful guitar with a beautiful tone and a surprising amount of projection.

A Ralph Bown OM.
I thought it was good when I bought it used from Ralph (it used to be Clive Carroll's), but it really grew on me when I got it home, and did so slowly over several weeks. I came to appreciate it's balance and refinement, attributes that may not be immediately obvious after 5 minutes. Cheers, Steve |

Most of the guitars that I have kept have happily surprised me. But which one surprised me the most? I’d say it was a tie between my Webber Jumbo (actually, a small jumbo, Sitka over Walnut) and my Goodall Grand Concert (Port Orford Cedar over Prima Vera). I was reflecting just yesterday as I was playing the Goodall that it is a delightful experience most of the time when I play it.

A Jumbo by Gage Halland. I had never heard of him until he was recommended by Dream Guitars. This instrument is now my Nr. 1 light years ahead of every other guitar I've owned including Somogyi, Greenfield, Traugott, Olson, Matsuda, McConnell, Lowden and more.

Gibson AG Parlor in Rosewood. Lotta' tone in that little guy! Just wish string spacing was a little wider.

The same guitar both underwhelmed me at purchase, and
later, happily surprised me. Some years ago I got a 1970s $100 plywood guitar (Citation, "guitar of quality") from eBay... I hoped it would be just like my college buddies work-horse favorite guitar, also a Citation, that he plays happily to this day. It wasn't the same model (not a dreadnought) and the action was high... fooey... Recently I quit caring that it was smaller than a dreadnought and took it to a good luthier... it needed a neck reset to be playable... $350 of work on a $100 guitar? I told him I'd do it if he'd do it... it came back wonderful ... -Mike |

Voyage-Air VAM-04. I am regularly pleased about how good it plays and sounds. Loud, balanced, and it folds up !!!
This guitar has me completely agnostic about things like neck joint method and back and side woods. In general now I lean toward sound and functionality with fewer pre-conceptions. Lee

Eastman E10D-TC. I had an Eastman E20OM-TC and found it on the quiet side. It wasn't what I expected. It was sweet but ultimately I didn't bold with it. I ended up trading it for an E10D-TC and rolled the dice. The guitar I got was incredibly loud and resonant. It shocked me how good it sounded. Maybe even better than my HD28. Certainly better than any (modern) stock D18 or D18V I've ever played. I've heard it said that Eastman Mahogany guitars tend to be a cut above their Rosewood offerings but I don't know that that is true. I know I love my mahogany Eastman.

I end up happy with most of the guitars that have come thru my hands. some need more TLC to get right then others.
that said, two stand out.. A 2005 Taylor Grand Symphony that was just stellar the day I picked it up and tried in a music store. I was not even planning on a purchase that day, just killin time, yet, there it was... Still have it, still fantastic. The most recent wasn't an acoustic, a Gretsch 5422TG. Was looking for something that wasn't Fender, or Gibson, so I started checking out the Electromatics. Was not quite sure about this so I wasn't going for the MIJ higher end ones.. Tried a few locally, they were nice, but not what I was looking for (Hollow Double Cut).. So I ordered one up on line. It was pretty amazing right out of the box the only thing it really needed was some nut work. once that was done, it is impressive how well it plays, and sounds. |
