Amen to this.

This represents the different climate zones and the "need" for a Humidipak.

In the SE, it's very humid and a quick check of my in-case hygrometer tells me if I need to moisten the sponge.

In your area, it's probably an everyday pursuit.

Yep. Good point. Here in the Southwest (Oklahoma) trying to keep sponges wet is a chore. Makes the extra expense of Humidipaks well worth it...for me.

That’s it. They’re a no brainer here in Canadian winters. They last quite a long time for me, and they are effortless.

I have two hygrometers that consistently read within 1% of each other. I put one in a guitar case with a Humidipak and one in a case without any climate management.

I just checked the readings for both...

• Case without climate management: 63% humidity
• Case with Humidipak: 60% humidity

My conclusion is the Humidipak is a waste of money.

My experience has been they do a better job of humidifying than dehumidifying.

Good to know, thanks!

Maybe I should put some socks filled with rice inside the cases.

Before messing around with rice cakes in my guitar case, I would just buy (or save up from electronics purchases) some silica gel desiccant packs for when that is necessary. They can be recharged by baking gently on a low temperature when needed.

Kudos to everyone who uses Humidi-Paks and I certainly understand the appeal, but I've seen the mess they make in the unlikely (but not impossible) event that they leak inside your case, or worse still in your guitar.

Well you might be missing the main point of them. As was suggested, they are not primarily intended for de-humidification despite the marketing. They do the job of humidifying in my tough Canadian winters perfectly...

You need air conditioning or a dehumidifier or both right now, not a humidipak.

Any time you put water in a guitar case you are running the risk of something going wrong and the guitar becoming over humidified. Over humidifying can cause wood to bulge, finish to tarnish and peel and strings, tuners etc. to rust and become discolored. I ruined the finish on my HD28 by over humidifying in the case. Be sure to monitor the humidity level if you do this.

And there is the advantage of humidipaks in the winter. They stay in an acceptable range that will not do those things...unless you recharge them like some people do...I did that for a bit until my monitoring proved without a doubt, at least in my environment, that the humidipaks were overhumidifying when I tried to cheap out and "recharge" them against the manufacturer recommendations.
