Default RIP: Peter Tork

Sad to hear this.

https://www.latimes.com/local/obitua...htmlstory.html

The Monkees were one of my favorite groups in the mid 60's, even more so than The Beatles to me. Never missed an episode of the show

RIP Peter

The Monkees were the soundtrack of my youth.....5 years old standing in front of the Curtis Mathes spinning Meet the Monkees, More of the Monkees and Monkee's Headquarters. I knew all the words to all of their songs.....literally what got me started singing. I purchased all three of them on Japanese pressings in the 80's and still have them. I think I'll pull them out today for Peter.

I remember watching their show every week. It was always sappy but I got to hear a new Monkee's song. Godspeed Mr. Tork. Thanks for the memories.

According to various sources his spot was originally slated to go to Stephen Stills - TMK there's an early group screen test clip showing him with the other three members - but it was decided at the last minute that Stills didn't exactly fit the "family-appeal" image the producers wanted; could have been an interesting combination with Mike Nesmith...

RIP Peter...

i used to watch The Monkeys every Saturday. I did the intertwined leg walk, from the opening theme song, with my three sisters at the beach.

I also liked the Monkey Mobile, a modified GTO with a huge convertible top.

RIP, Peter.

According to one source:

After Peter Thorkelson graduated from college in Connecticut, he spent much of his time playing folk music in various clubs in New York's Greenwich Village. He eventually moved to the West Coast and got gigs on the L.A. folk circuit. Stephen Stills (later of Buffalo Springfield and Crosby, Stills and Nash fame) auditioned for The Monkees and was told that he'd be perfect for the show if only his hairline wasn't already receding and his teeth were in better shape. Rather than being bitter at the rejection, he immediately recommended his good friend and look-alike Peter Tork to the producers. Peter had the appropriate "look" and could also play guitar, bass and banjo, so the group was now complete.

Indeed. Things never aligned for me to see them live, but I have The Monkees to thanks for most of the music I love. Saturday morning reruns of the series introduced me to them and the first album I ever bought was their Greatest Hits. From there it was a steady kaleidoscopic spiral into psychedelia - The Beatles' 'Revolver' followed soon after and then Jim, Jimi and Janis, the Dead and the Airplane.

Eight Monkees' concerts in 1967 featured Jimi Hendrix as the opening act despite the strangeness of that pairing....

At the time, Jimi was pretty much unknown in the US despite having had successes in the UK. Basically, the guys in the Monkees heard Hendrix play, and decided this guy is great, we gotta get him some exposure over here, and they made their management book him as an opening act on their upcoming tour.

Good intentions on their part . . . but yeah, it turned out the Monkees demographic was not the Jimi Hendrix Experience demographic .

Very sad. I was only 5 years old in 1966 when I first saw their tv show. I went crazy for them and I remember being extremely disappointed (ok threw a tantrum) when my brother got their record album for Christmas. I got some Peter Rabbit childrens record. [emoji35]
