Default Looking at getting a dashcam from Walmart. Suggestions?

I got a Walmart gift card for Christmas, and I'm thinking of buying a dash cam because of my daily commute. There was a thread on here from 2015, but I'm sure the technology has gotten better and cheaper since then.

So is there anything decent that can be had for under $100 now? I'd like one that includes a rear camera as well if possible. Thanks!

I was glad to see this thread pop up as its a question I'm wrestling with.
My son encouraged me to get a dashcam, so when Costco had one on sale, I bought it.
It was around $170, less a $30 rebate, about $140.

But now, I'm looking to upgrade to one that's just under $400.
Why?
1) license plate numbers
2) night vision.

The lesser models are simply lesser models.
With fewer features and narrower capability.
Just like guitars I guess.

Not a direct answer to your question, but it's my experience so far.
I hope others will chime in.

I appreciate your reply. I guess this is another example of "you get what you pay for" sort of thing. I drive so much, and I'm a really safe driver, but I'm just trying to avoid litigation whenever possible.

"... trying to avoid litigation whenever possible."

Precisely!

Which is why I'm moving up to one that is more likely to accurately display a license number in low light, or at night.

I spoke with a police officer who said..
"Okay, great, you can show that a small white car ran the light and hit you.
It's not your fault, it is theirs, so you don't get a ticket.
But if the video doesn't clearly indicate the license number,
it's ineffective, and we can't use the video to go after them.
So YOUR insurance company fixes your car, not THIER insurance company."

One time, just one time, I don't have to employ my deductible, and the higher end camera pays for itself.
(can you hear me talking myself into this?)

It's kinda like having a first aid kit in your car...
you hope you'll never need to use it, but you'll be glad to have it if you ever do.

Again, my apologies for not addressing your question directly, but having had a "good" one and seen its limitations, it's worth it to me to aim a little higher and get a "better" or maybe "best" one.

On Amazon they have very good cameras for far less. I've been using one for about two years that was about $50.

Can you read licence plate numbers?

I keep watching for more posts on this thread, but apparently this is a topic of relatively limited interest among AGF'rs.

Btw, both the one I have and the one I'm considering are 2 camera models,
with front and rear facing cameras.

The one I have works ok for license numbers in daytime conditions,
but not in low light or at night, especially with the back camera.
