I am picky about the fit of all the mating parts when the box comes together, especially around the neck block. I want that section to lock and stay together even before any glue is involved. It always takes me a while to get it tight but is satisfying when it all comes together.
I do think of the neck block and upper bouts of the top and back as being the most important structural area of the guitar and have tried to put a lot of work into making them as optimized as I can. Locking all the braces into the big neck block and linings is one part of that and the compound dome of the back going flat into the upper bout is another.

Burton,
That's quite the interior design you've come up with. I really enjoy seeing your build threads.

you can just look at the pictures and tell how light and resonant that guitar will be. Enjoy.

I like how you've done the head-block area and the tail-block area. I personally enjoy seeing innovation, trying to make it better/lighter - trying to improve the idea etc.
This should really make the body stiff and provide excellent rigidity for the long haul. Showing this stuff also points out all the work involved. I think a lot of people overlook this. Have a peaceful day. Kevin. |

Kevin,
Thanks for your reply. It is a lot of work! I find the mental work to be the most time consuming, imagining all the forces and trying to temper them without upsetting the system. It is compounded by the fact that the "regular" system already works pretty well. Usually my initial ideas are very convoluted and it takes a while before I can simplify it into something workable. I do believe that the simpler the successful idea, the more elegant it is. I am sure I can still pare it back further, it just takes time. It reminds me of a quote that Ken Parker presented at his ASIA talk a few years ago: "simplicate, and add lightness" I took it to heart. (even if it doesn't look simpler....)

Those wood sets really are something. Burton, make sure you get some audio and/or video of this before it goes to its new home!

It is so interesting to see all of the different approaches that luthiers have to building guitars. This one is especially interesting!

Beautiful work, and fascinating design! Burton does great work. I've played his guitars, and they always play and sound fantastic. Also, I love the light build, the CF neck reinforcement, and the cutaways. This one look s like it will prove to be stellar. Nice work Burton!
