Default The "Tree" FS

A fellow came by my shop last week with a very nice piece of the "tree" he had bought from Handlogger's Hardwoods in the early 1980's. After asking my advice about milling it, he agreed to have me do it, and wasting no time I acquired a couple of fresh Bandsaw blades and had at it. Despite my having little experience retailing wood, he also asked me to assist with that. We have priced the wood at about 85% of what appears to be a constantly increasing market value.

It's certainly not cheap, but I do think this is fair value, and the material is in perfect condition, .0125" thick after being sanded on the matching faces. The are 5 sets each in OM/000 and in D sizes.

There is one set in each size which is "Flitch Matched", which means 4 consecutive cuts both wide enough for backs and long enough for sides. The board was full tortoise at one end and moved toward sausage the the other. The Flitch sets are toward the middle of the board and the transition, though subtle, can be observed if you know to look. Seriously beautiful to my eye.
The Flitch D is $7k, and the flitch OM being 1/2" narrower, is $6750.

One set of D and one set of OM/000 have the same back as the flitch sets, and the same sides as the non-flitch sets.
The D is $6k, and the OM/000 is $5750.

Then there are the truly quilted backs, 3 in D and 3 in OM/000, with sides from the other end of the same board.
The D size is $5500, and the Om size is $5250.

Here are some pictures. The first cuts, 8 in 1 3/8":

The whole board, only 6 cuts in 1 3/8" for the backs:

Bruce: Thank you for posting the story and pics. I wish I was in the market for a set! Interesting and beautiful. Good luck with finding these a home. I imagine the interest will be high.

absolutely stunning!!! masterpieces that look like a far-off stream in the woods shimming in the summer sun peaking through the trees and hitting the water.
