Default Jimmy Foster 7 string

Recently purchased a Jimmy Foster 7 string via the local Craig's List. The seller turned out to be quite the player, as I purchased two of his albums back in the 90s.

Here is the guitar:

Having purchased an Emerald X20-7 7 string acoustic from another forum member who lives locally, I found that I took to it pretty well, so the next obvious step was a 7 string archtop. You never know what will work for you until you try it. I was very fortunate to find both of these instruments.

Jimmy Foster lived in New Orleans and was both a player and a builder. Among jazz guitarists, he is fairly well known. He died in 2011, so there are no more new instruments from him. A hallmark of his instruments is playability. Also, probably becuase he played fingerstyle, the string spacing on this gjuitar is as wide as it is on my Emerald - certainly wide enough for comfortable fingerstyle playing.

The pickup is a custom Kent Armstrong. I don't know the year this guitar was built and though Jimmy's site is still up, I couldn't find an correlation of serial number to build year.

Very nice looking instrument, Tony - happy to be the catalyst for your 7-string adventures

I like the tidy approach to creating a 7-string tailpiece.

How do you like its sound, compared to others that you've owned and played?

Thanks David. Yep, it is all your fault!

Of course, the tone of the Kent Armstrong pickup is excellent, warm. Acoustically, it sounds quite good - all solid woods and hand carved. I don't know that there are many that can match my Citation, but this is in the ballpark. I couldn't hope for a nicer 7 string archtop, especially since Jimmy Foster was known for the playability of his instruments and that is a real priority for me.

I couldn't find any that have sold, so these are what I found to get some sort of idea of price area.

In the jazz guitar forum, Jimmy Foster built guitars seem to be highly thought of and it is certainly a quality instrument.
