Color affecting sound?
Years back, I read a Guitar Player interview with some rocker who claimed he could hear the difference between battery brands in his effects pedals....
It was my opinion that he was simply having the interviewer on... This morning, I see that Billy Corgan is saying that the color of paint on a solid-body electric affects the sound. Now I know that electric players argue endlessly over wood types and such, but the color of the paint? I think he’s having us on as well. |

The psychological aspects affecting our views of reality are not to be ignored, but I think he is joking.

Some people claim that guitar straps affect tone. Others swear by directional guitar cables.

Well guitar players, and electric guitar player especially, hear with the eyes a lot, maybe he's joking about that?
Though it's not color, but over the years the sonic impact of the type of paint and primer used on even a solid body electric guitar is a matter of ongoing discussion. I tend to think that any possible small difference in finish types is overwhelmed by the other variables to the point of irrelevance, but I do admit to liking the colors (as well as the shape variations) of electric guitars. Even it makes no difference in sound, they are fun to look at and hold in their variety.

Billy Corgan either went a little bonkers or was trolling to generate traffic.

Black can sound a bit dead and flat.
White, on the other hand, can sound too bright and thin. It's usually best to pick a colour in between. |

I saw that Corgan headline yesterday. Not sure if he's serious or not but I've never found that in my experience .

I agree, but yellow is very mellow, and red can sound aggressive, even angry. I usually prefer the blues and greens...and don't get me started on the various bursts, flakes, or binding!

Ken Kesey is reported to have been able to taste color and perceive differences in the depth of ink on a printed page, but I'm pretty sure that was brought on by something other than music appreciation ...
