I did this for years when I played in a Bluegrass band and there was never any damage ... the only things I could think of that would be concerns are 1) if the strap has any metal or other aspects that would be considered sharp or hard that could scratch or mar the finish should there be any shifting in travel or 2) if the guitar in the case is exposed to warmer temps (which could cause other issues as well of course)

Some straps can cause damage to some finishes. Do yourself a favor and don't find out the wrong way. Take the strap off and put it in the stash box.

I think the real question is how do you wrap the strap? Folded over the top? Around under the back? Taken off completely and stashed? Or wrapped around? For some reason my Taylor with its case seems to "like" the strap around from around the back.
In any case I'd invest in a Taylor brand suede strap. Best strap I've ever owned. Then if it damages the finish you know who to talk to. But it won't because it's sooooo soft. |

I leave my Taylor Suede Strap on my DMSM in the case. There isn't on spot on it that isn't soft.

+1 on the Taylor Suede strap. But I still take mine off, roll it up and put it in the stash compartment. But I don't use the strap every time I play.

I take mine off the upper bout pin, leaving it on the end pin, then lay it flat along the strings when I put it in the case.

The solvents & chemicals in certain materials like finsihed leather and vinyl (and rubber i.e. on guitar stands) can ruin delicate finishes like nitro-cellulose. Chances are Taylor's UV finish would be OK.

That's how I used to do it when I was playing Bluegrass since I was almost always playing with the strap and standing up ... nowadays, I seldom use a strap so I keep it rolled up in the stash compartment ...
