A REALLY Limited Edition
I recently scored an early 1970's JBL D123 from the midwest. Despite it showing a 16 Ohm label, it's actually 6.4 on the meter. This was S.O.P for JBL for some reason. It is a low profile 12" that JBL listed as a Full Range driver. It was featured in many JBL enclosures, sometime with no tweeter, if memory serves.
It has long been sought after by electric players who use low wattage amps, and is the favorite guitar speaker of Harvey Gerst of JBL, who designed many famous JBL speakers for Fender. It sounds really nice in my 2017 Fender Princeton Reverb Burgundy LE. I'll save the Jensen 12" it came with for posterity. [IMG][/IMG] Howard |

Nice find Howard. I had never heard of the D123. JBL's are my favorite speakers and I really like the 15 inch versions. I have both a D120 and a D130. What is the difference between the D123 and D120, is it the profile? -- Darwin

Wattage, frequency response and profile. They were designed to fit in walls or ceiling spaces, evidently. Howard Last edited by Howard Emerson; 12-15-2018 at 07:48 AM. |

Howard, congrats on finding that speaker. We don't have enough speaker threads here on the electric sub forum.

That JBL badge in the lower right-hand corner is a nice period touch...
Had a D120 in my '64 Ampeg Rocket for a while - hope you've been putting in time at the gym, since IME it'll probably double the weight of that little Princeton...

The JBL logo on the speaker grill cloth is a nice touch. Congratulations on the cool find!

It’s 12 lbs, so probably an extra 7 over the Jensen. The badge is held via magnet, by the way! I’ve always been an Ampeg amp fan, especially the early M12 and early Jet, especially when they have the boomerang pattern grill cloth! Howard |

Fellow lifelong Ampeg fan too, but I'm more a blue-check guy - Gemini I/II, B-15 (try a JBL in one of those for pure bass nirvana), and the underappreciated B-12XT Portaflex guitar amp (very conservatively rated at 60 watts - more like 70-75 in a real-world situation, huge clean headroom, and IME well-deserving of its "Twin-killer" cult nickname). Don't want to jinx it, but I've got a line on something interesting in this area - I'll try to check it out this week and post if I follow through...

Here's some good pics of the JBL D123 as I was installing it in the Ampeg. As you can see it's quite a bit shallower than the famous D120 speaker. One thing to note when installing one is that the nuts need to be finger tightened only and more torque on the nuts can result in speaker cone burnout according to Harvey Gerst! It sounds fantastic!!!
