I like your gestural transitions that create "visual tension" at the mid-point of the f-hole. Here is an example of a traditional f-hole chamfering on my archtop. The f-hole chamfer is sometimes left wide at the waste and it tapers down at the ends. Kudos

Mike,
This is turning out beautifully! Love the wood burning and f-hole details.... |

Thanks for the kind words everyone! Getting close to finishing up the woodwork on this one -- just need to do a little more tweaking on the neck and it's on to french polishing.
One of the quickest and most satisfying jobs in the whole process is turning this... Into this... And here's the neck waiting to be carved... Just about ready for finishing! A serendipitous benefit of the access port is that it perfectly fits my camera lens... Mike |

Well, I'm LONG overdue for an update on this guitar! It was an interesting process doing the finish for this one -- the wood burning on the top definitely made for some unique challenges!
Here's the walnut back looking all nice and shiny... And the neck in midst of polishing... (the other neck with the "crooked" head veneer is for the fan-fret destined for Memphis... more on that one soon!) The top... There were also several challenges that arose from not having a traditional soundhole. Luckily with a sound port gluing the neck on just required some longer clamps than normal! As I was preparing/sanding the fingerboard for fretting, I noticed a really neat pattern in my shopmate's (Nic Delisle) radius sanding block... And here it is just waiting for the frets to be smashed in! Fitting the nut... Using a vacuum clamp to glue on the bridge... As you can probably tell from this onslaught of pictures, this one is just about done! Lots more little picky finishing jobs to take care of, but I'll hopefully have strings on and a demo recorded in the next week or so! Stay tuned... Mike |

Looks amazing Mike! Beautiful work, inside and out.
Nice piece in AG this month too...looking forward to trying out the fan-fret in June. (PS: Is it permitted to play bluegrass on a fan-fret guitar?) |

Quite a thrill as well to see the article in this month's Acoustic Guitar! My friends are coming over tomorrow afternoon to record a couple of demos and I'll hopefully have a video up sometime on Wednesday! Mike |

Mike,
I'm demoing for myself too...glad to hear I'm not the only one! I was nervous as heck getting up there for my Woodstock demo... and of course I had to follow Craig D'Andrea to make it extra-easy. Now if we could just get Ervin to play some flamenco... Cheers, Martin |

In exciting news, the guitar is done! My friends Léa Sanacore and Léandre Joly-Pelletier came by the shop yesterday to record a couple of demos on this guitar. Léandre and I play in a bluegrass band together and Léa often sits in with us for our weekly Sunday gigs (Grumpy's Bar from 6-8 if you're ever in Montreal!). The first demo they recorded is the Louvin Brother's "I Don't Believe You've Met My Baby"... I'm quite happy with the strength of tone even capoed up on the 4th fret. I'm also quite happy to have such amazingly talented and generous friends! Mike |
