So close, and yet so far. I've lived in Denver now (actually Englewood) for about 6 weeks and I didn't know about this festival. I exchanged a couple of e-mails with Corey Christiansen earlier this week on a different topic and asked him to let me know the next time he is the Denver area, so I could come and hear him play. He told me about the festival. That's the so close part.

Unfortunately, that weekend I'll be back in California dropping my daughter off at college...she's an incoming freshmen at UCSB. That's the so far part.

Also saw Jimmy Bruno's plug for this festival on YouTube today.

For those able to go, enjoy! It promises to be a great gathering!

Cool! Are you a builder? Or did you loan/sell him a guitar that you own? Just curious...couldn't see the peghead on the guitar he is playing.

The builder of that guitar is Philadelphia luthier Bill Comins. Bill made that guitar for me back in 2012-2013. It is a 16” Comins Classic archtop. Bill had just set it up for me, and since Jimmy is a friend of mine, he dropped it at Jimmy’s where he made the promotional video for the show.

That is a beautiful archtop. Love the flame on the back. We don't see too many (if any) Comins guitars on the west coast.

Huge fan of Jimmy's too. Besides being a monster guitarist who has overcome incredible odds, he is a great teacher as well.

You're very fortunate to be friends with such a legendary master. I'm sure he is equally fortunate to be friends with you.

Thank you for posting photos of your beautiful guitar.

Thanks very much. Bill has probably made > 300 guitars over the last 25 years but not many are typically be in circulation on the second hand market so I can understand you rarely seeing them. Come to the Rocky Mountain Archtop Festival and play some... Jimmy is not only a great player, but an intelligent and funny guy. I am glad that I got to know him after listening to him all these years...

Default Just a quick bulletin

It's dinner hour at the RMAF, just before a full night of multiple sets at five or six locations. It's a vision of jazz guitar heaven! Today's instructional workshops were very informative, and it's been a thrill to meet these legendary makers, too. It's a very intimate, laid-back event whith very personable performers and intent audiences (except for the back of the beer hall). If you were there, then you're not reading this now; those who weren't should think about attending next year. Personally, I'm on my way back there now.

Hoping this event is a HUGE success and becomes an annual event. I'm so bummed I missed this, this year. Whatever the case, I hope everyone is having a memorable time!

Default What a weekend!

Since nobody else has chimed in yet, here's my spectator's take on the festival. The guitars on display were dazzling, all alluring and seemingly perfectly made. The makers were totally accessible, approachable and personable. The workshops offered lessons that each cracked the code of jazz improvisation, a piece at a time. And the concerts, played in tiny local venues that usually host only local performers, were divine (when you could hear them. In this first year of the festival, the bar and winery were largely filled with loud talkers who had no interest in the festival).

My frustration came from not being able to be in all the events at once. I missed much more than I saw and heard, but most of the performers I saw convinced me to track down their music further: Ted Ludwig, Tim Lerch , Bruce Forman with his Red Guitar show, Nate Lopez, Sean McGowan and Paul Abell. Players' style leaned towards tradition, but Lopez' eight-string electric guitar bass and funky right hand spiced up the night.

Musicians and makers probably outnumbered the civilian spectators. I sometimes felt like a pretender. When someone asked me how long I'd played jazz guitar," I meekly answered, "Well, sometimes I play the guitar to jazz." But foremost, I'm an avid and active listener. Whether or not these tips and techniques take root in my own playing, they will aid my listening abilities every time I listen to real jazz guitar.

I hope this event turns out to be a success. I couldn't have imagined the mildly historic, deeply suburban town of Arvada would suddenly transform to a cosmopolitan mecca of high guitar artistry, but that's what happened, and a day later, I miss it already.
