Default Huge Funnel Web donated to reptile park

Although by no means the biggest arachnids about there is something a bit disturbing about these monsters, the males are deadly at any size & even with antivenom adminstered the bite is reportedly extremely painful with some long lasting effects.

I used to see quite a few of these in Sydney in 1996/97 while clearing the bush for the M2 motorway & they were generally 20-30mm long (about 1"). We killed one about 40mm long on the front porch of a house we were renting at the time. Didn't realise even then the Reptile Park was paying bounties for live specimens (as part of the venom milking program) but in all honesty probably would not have changed the outcome. It just had to go.

This giant is 80mm (about 3.5"). The sight of it crawling over the hat's enough for me. The stuff of nightmares.

I once had multiple long lasting effects after eating an entire huge funnel cake at a county fair.

I remember reading somewhere that the funnel-web has fangs long enough to pierce a chicken's skull.

I'm amazed that I've never heard that funnel web spiders have been introduced to Florida. Well, maybe more thankful than amazed.

When I see something like that, I realize that all of those scary creatures in the shlocky '50s sci-fi horror films weren't scary enough. Real monsters don't have to be 50 feet tall to kill you, and real monsters are alive on earth right now.
Now, if you'll excuse me, I have to go look in every dark corner of my house for things that shouldn't be there...

There's never a chicken around when you need one though ...

Best,
