My repaired Larrivee guitar
I have photos of my repaired Larrivee handmade acoustic guitar. Would you be satisfied with this repair?
If not, is there more cosmetic work I can have done to it? I was charged only $85.00 for the repair. However, I was told it might go up to $150 or even $200. To the moderators, I don't know if I should have posted this in my original thread or not. My apologies in advanced. It looks like it was cleated from behind and it's now stabilized. To me it looks just fine for what you paid. The next step would be to fill it and blend in the finish. |

Doesn’t look much better

So it could have been done better then...
What would you suggest I do now?

So I can take it to someone else and get an estimate then.

I kind of recall your original thread.
It looks like it was filled with a matching piece of wood and cleated from the back. No hole, better than before and won’t (presumably) get worse. For $85, I think you got a good deal. I wonder how much better it could be? With the figuring of the wood, it is going to take extensive and precise artwork by a skilled repair person to match any better, plus a very careful refinishing. I bet it would cost a ton to really make go away. Is it worth it? It is on the down side of the lower bout and you got a good repair for the money. |

I have a few questions.
I missed if you told us how it happened. For $85, if the work is good and not in danger of deteriorating further, I'd probably be happy. It's primarily a protective and functional repair first. Not every tech or luthier is capable of duplicating/matching the surface of wood. Would loved to have seen it in average room light from 5 feet away, and holding it in my lap and playing it. It's always a shame to ding beautiful finish. |

When I saw your post about this a few weeks ago, the first thing that came to mind was that I wondered if this "hole" was near a cross brace inside.
Since there is no way you could match the koa, I thought it might actually look better to have someone cut a slightly larger than the damage rectrangle out (center it, of course) and put a piece of maple to match the binding in. Just thinking outside the box where I spend most of my time.

If I was expecting only for it to be stabilized it might be fine, but frankly I don't know how you could possibly tell without them providing you a picture of the inside surface showing what was done. If you were told to expect a cosmetic repair as well, then it's an obvious "no" IMO, I wouldn't be satisfied at all. In the latter case though, I'd have expected to pay a fair amount more.

As was mentioned several times in the first post, call Larrivee and see what they feel could be done, including before and now after pictures. It is really hard to tell how stable that repair is from the pictures, but it does not seem like as cosmetically clean a bit of work, as could have been done...but again, hard to tell from just the pictures. I personally would not be all that happy with the work, and I would probably try and seek out another repairman/luthier, to have them look at it...after calling Larrivee first. Where do you live, maybe folks here can give you the name of a really well regarded repair tech/luthier to have a second look at it. duff Be A Player...Not A Polisher |
