8 Guitars in 10 minutes
Hi everyone!
This past Sunday, a couple of fellow guitar nuts came over to my place for a few hours of music, mirth and merriment. Between the three of us there were: - eight truly special guitars - one iPhone on a stand - one matched pair of Neumann KM184s - one Focusrite 2i4 audio interface - one MacBook Pro with GarageBand and iMovie - and one player who was particularly gifted at bringing out the best of each. This was not intended to be scientific in any way. Arnaud just played, and Alain and I passed him guitars and made sure the recording equipment was working properly. In order of appearance you'll see a Claxton OM, a De Jonge SSS, a Baranik Meridian and 00m, a Loef Slope Shoulder Dread and Parlor, a Baranik Retreux Parlor, and finally a 1917 Martin 1-21, the most intriguing of them all. You can see the results here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Vq8c...ature=youtu.be Hope you find it of interest. Cheers!

Well, I enjoyed this. It did remind me why I don't play dreads. And, anybody who sees/hears this should be disavowed of the notion that true parlor size are boxy sounding, assuming they are built by luthiers who know what they are doing.
Thanks for this, Steve

Great comparison. I like the parlors the most of all of them, and of the parlors I like the Martin the most. It sounds exactly like some of the small Martins I recently played from that era. The notes explode off the soundboard in a way I have heard no modern guitar replicate.

Very nice! Especially the Martin 1-21.
My best friend just bought an 1891 1-21 in excellent condition, with original coffin case, as well. It has an amazing sound and your video shows that the little 1-21 can hold its own. David

Thanks for sharing and showcasing a group of wonderful guitars Deft. BTW, I agree that the Martin sounded fantastic. There is truly something magical and special about old woods and the natural aging process they endure over time. Just imagine how those other guitars will sound to your grand kids in 102 years. You should put those recordings in a time capsule with instruction to open and compare in 2119

Thanks for the comparison Mark, what a great opportunity to hear spectacular guitars of different sizes / makers next to another.
I could not be there that time around, but Mark has been a driving force of recent guitar nuts' reunions in Paris. A real treat! Cheers, |

Thanks for that, Deft. Very enjoyable. It was interesting to see how the different guitars were (it seemed) inspiring him in different ways. For instance, when he got the Baraniks in his hands, more of a classical technique emerged. One can't know exactly what the player is feeling, but the music coming out gives some clue. Those overtones (my guess?) seemed to move him.
What really surprised me was how big the Loef parlor sounded! That little guy was minuscule, but sounded anything but tiny. Thanks again--these comparisons are truly helpful. Steve |

Thanks for all the positive feedback, everyone! It means a lot to all three of us.
If you go to my YouTube channel, you’ll now find the whole video broken down into individual clips for each guitar. I even figured out how to put in titles!!
