I have a vintage Guild F 212 made in around 1967. Some of the tuners slip and it was suggested that I replace them. They still work but are a pain at times.
Three questions - 1. What is impact on value of my guitar if I replace the tuners? 2. What tuner is best to use? 3. Where do you get them? Thanks for any advice. Last edited by sumajama; 03-29-2016 at 12:24 PM. |

I suggest you go to Let's Talk Guild and ask. There will be someone who has been there, done that.

Thanks Br1ck. I checked there and found others with same issue. Nothing recent in the posts but maybe some one will notice it.

I'll go put a bug in an ear, over there and see if I can kick start your thread. Did you start one, or just do a search ?

Tricky since they are 6-on-a-plate tuners.
Mine don't slip, (1973) but a few are bound so badly that you almost need extra leverage to turn them at all.

Can you post a photo?
In the mean time check Stewart Macdonald and see if these Golden Age tuners will work http://www.stewmac.com/Hardware_and_...ad_Guitar.html

I did not start a new thread but there is one called "PARTS ARE PARTS RIGHT? NOT!" that is relevant. It also has a picture of the tuners I need.

That is an awesome guitar!
I think that probably what is most important is that it is functional, even if it isn't 100% original. After almost 50 years, it is probably okay to change the tuners if they have worn out. As others have suggested the "Let's Talk Guild Forum" should be full of helpful suggestions. |

Sumajama, swapping out the tuners is a very common modification, and so long as the work is done cleanly it's doubtful that it'll have a negative impact on the guitar's value. I would recommend that you simply get two sets of 3 x 3 Gotoh mini tuners and have them installed. Hang onto the original gears if there is a chance you'll resell the guitar, but if you do replace the gears with Gotohs, you'll be astonished at how much better the guitar stays and plays in tune: it'll be better than the original tuners ever were even when brand new.
A further refinement, if you want to cut some weight, is to get ebony or plastic aftermarket buttons to replace the metal buttons that come stock on the Gotohs. Hope this helps. Wade Hampton Miller |
