Using non-musical aspects in a song?
I realize this may me looked down upon, but for a,folk/Americana song, is it okay to have a lead in that is not music? I mean the sound of a storm, a church bell, etc?

The genre of the song shouldn't matter. Go for it. Record the next "Riders on the Storm" or "Leader of the Pack" or "Money."

This. Record what you hear in your head. If your imagination tells you a certain sound is what the song needs, listen to it.

Yes I was thinking the same thing ... Riders on the Storm is such a great example and how it enhances the song

Absolutely! I’ve been on a big UK contemporary folk thing over the last two years, particularly young Scottish artists. One album I’ve been very into is Jenny Sturgeon’s The Living Mountain. It’s a gorgeous album inspired by Nan Shepherd's famous book of the same name written at the end of the second world war as an ode top the Cairngorm mountain range. The album was produced by one of my favorite producers right now, Andy Bell. https://magicandy81.tumblr.com Anyway, they used a more or less a continuous track of environmental sounds throughout the whole album. Most of them very natural, some very processed.. I love how it ties the whole thing together. Anyway, long winded answer, but I really love this album and listen to it all the time. Follow your muse. It's art -everything is okay to do. https://www.jennysturgeonmusic.com/thelivingmountain

Yes!!!! Can’t think of a genre where “non music” hasn’t been used. Generally, I personally find musical use (or use in music) of sounds or items that are not traditionally thought of as “instruments” fascinating.

This is one of mine called Turn Out in the Wind.
Well after I wrote it I was diving in Akumal on the Yucatan when a tropical storm rolled through and I got some iPhone video

I used to do it on a regular basis back when I recorded on a regular basis and would have no hesitation about doing it again. The bottom line is always do what works for YOU.
And if some people look down on the result?... “Better to write for yourself and have no public, than to write for the public and have no self."

Thanks everyone. I already have the non musical part set. Now I need to actually record the song! I'll post it up once it's done.

The Beatles did this many times, on songs I can't quite recall. The modernist composers called it Music Concrete, incorporating recored sounds from real life.

I adore the sounds of a great guitar, violins, cellos, flutes. And I thrive on the rhythms of a great drum beat. However if suddenly in some alternate universe I were given the mandatory choice of only being able to listen to 30 seconds of just one sound, for the rest of my life, and nothing else; 30 seconds of any sound of my choosing...and nothing else, it would not be 30 seconds of any of those instruments. I would easily choose the sound of a Waterfall, or that of a Roaring Wind. |

On his bandcamp page, the recordings are different than the videos. He'll have a storm at the beginning of one and the sounds of a stream for another, etc.
