Default First Setup

Just took delivery of a new guitar, one that was just delivered to the store. Brand new. The action is a little high for me. I was thinking about waiting a few months for the setup to give the guitar time to settle in a bit.

How long should I wait to get it setup?

I'd do it right away and enjoy playing it.

I would let it acclimate to your location for about a month before doing a set up. It needs to get used to your conditions prior to setting it where you would like it.

I'm assuming you have an acoustic guitar (yeah, I know this is an acoustic forum but you never know.!)

I think THE KID and MMM are both right. Maybe something between the two would be good. The sooner you can get it set up the sooner you'll enjoy your new guitar. However, it's good to let it season a bit in the climate in which you live. Maybe a week???

PS- make sure you have the string gauge you want put on the guitar.
Sometimes they can make a difference in the set up.

I would wait just a little less than a nanosecond.

A guitar does not have to settle in before you get it set up. No one should make their playing more difficult by playing a guitar that is not as playable as possible. This way, you can enjoy your new guitar right away or at least as soon as you get it set up to your liking.

Set the relief, then wait overnight for the ajustment to settle in.

Also, see Bryan Kimsey's article on (minimal) relief. It really makes sense, especially if you routinely play up the neck.

There are many times I haven’t needed any setup when a guitar arrives directly from a builder. However, I typically wait at least a couple of weeks for the guitar to settle, unless it’s terrible/unplayable. This is especially true if you don’t know how the guitar has been handled.

I always have a new guitar set up upon receipt. Want to enjoy it asap. If things shift a bit after a time I just get another set up.
