I guess I don't understand, expressing prayers and thoughts is not meant as a preventative measure it's meant as a show of support for the victims. The two do not go hand in hand. One is surely entitled to express their sentiments to the victims while still seeking ways to prevent this in the future.

When a person is no longer alive- a thought or prayer does nothing.
I will not add to the possible provocative nature of this thread- I will simply point out facts. I like guitars, too. |

Seriously,? I'm pretty sure it was clear I was talking about their family and friends.

It is a nice thing to do- we all do it- but this has no actual effects- does it? I am completely serious, as are others. And I am done with this discussion here. It is- in fact- a guitar site. |

Then, by ALL means, find an appropriate place and do something about it.

I'm on my way to South Korea to inspect some aircraft engines. Only 1 mass shooting there in the last 66 years... https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cate...ngs_by_country |

I totally understand where you're coming from. I believe we all want the same things. We want these hideous shootings to stop and we all want the people who are were victims to know that we are thinking about them. I guess I never thought of sending thoughts and prayers or actually doing so somehow was an escape from reality of the situation. I've looked at them as separate issues always. Maybe not everyone does that as you point out, I am even more saddened if those words have just become meaningless.

Couldn't agree more, Song, but that's another discussion that can't go very far here.
My thanks to everyone who is keeping this thread within the rules and allowing folks to voice their concerns. |

Sometimes definitions are confusing https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mass_shooting
But certainly "any are too many." I recommend casting down the weapons and picking up the guitars. |

Dark days.
Hate to sound cliche but some peace love and understanding is the only thing that will change this environment we find ourselves in. Prayers are fine if they make you feel better, but tolerance MUST rise above divisiveness and prayers will not accomplish that. Unfortunately it seems that the problem is complex and multi factorial. |

Yes, awful and troubling. My prayers for the affected families.
"Mass shooting" has no universal definition, but borrowing from the FBI's definition of "mass murder" as being the killing of four or more people (not including the killer), a common definition is the wounding of four or more people during one shooting event. Prayer is not intended to prevent future occurrences, but to comfort and aid those hurting from the past and present. If you don't believe in prayer, then simply disregard it. |

I'm sure everyone here feels the shock and horror of these events as they keep happening without respite... so why can't we all just offer our sincere condolences without terminology referring to off limits topics and fostoring a tone of disharmony where none is needed?
Peace to all...

My son lives less than 1000 feet from the location of the shooting in Dayton, and frequents the Oregon District with friends. There certainly was a sick feeling in the pit of my stomach between the moment I learned about the shooting when I turned on the news upon getting out of bed, and the moment my wife checked her phone and saw that he had already sent a text, saying he was home at the time of the attack and was fine. God bless the victims and their families.
