sometimes it comes out...
Often a riff or part of a song will be in my head. Lately I've noticed when playing tennis or pickleball, I'll hum or whistle a few notes after making a hitting error (or my partner making one ), as a vocal reset instead of issuing an oath or imprecation.
Yesterday, I was at the Wyndham golf tourney with a buddy and the opening riff to ""Vehicle" by The Ides of March went through my head followed by my buddy supplying the opening line. I looked at him in amazement thinking he had read my mind for a moment, then sheepishly realized I had vocalized what was going through my head. |

I think I wrote my first song when I was 12 years old... and I've always loved music; Dad loved jazz, all sorts; Mom loved Ella and Frank and Sarah... I grew up in Southern California and fell deeply into music as a way to "escape" my folks' divorce and new step-parent issues... so I LISTENED really closely to what I was hearing, especially after about 1963 when songs started becoming MUCH more interesting, lyrically...
All this is to say, that, Yes... I hear songs inside of me all the time...sometimes tunes by others just "pop in", but over the years, I've learned to focus more on pieces, fragments of songs I have in progress... a lot of times, if I just "worry at it", critical lyrics or passages come to light. There is ALWAYS a song or two floating around inside me! I have a great collection of cds, maybe 1200 or so? Couple hundred vinyl records, bunch of cassette tapes - a great little stereo system (NAD receiver, B&W speakers, still have a Dual turntable and a NAD cassette deck... And I might actually put on something to listen to, one day out of thirty or forty days... I seem to find the music inside of me much more attractive and enticing than anything "out there'... Occasionally some "earworm" creeps in... which is especially frustrating when it's some lame song that has NOTHING to offer other than a catchy hook...

I have the same deal - I wake up with some song in my head and then I hurry on downstairs and try to play it on guitar. Sometimes it even works.

Thanks for the responses guys! Nice to see I'm not that strange. Right now it's Blind Blake's Chump Man Blues which I am in the middle of learning.

Yes, public air play and it's pretty bothersome.

Such a Brilliant Record!
Quote:
Jim Hall is one of my all time favorites, both as a player and composer... and this recording is wonderful... not a fan of Creed Taylor's production values, but you can't fault the players or the arranging! Steve Gadd, Ron Carter, Jim, et al... a terrific Earworm!!! Jim's recording, "Commitment" has a part of the same piece that is sublime...

I frequently listen to music at work (via headphones), so those times are fine. But even when I'm not listening to music, I usually have some beat, melody, or song going on in my head (except when I'm engaged in a conversation; then I have to place everything else on mute!).
BTW, I also have a t-shirt that says: 90% of my brain is song lyrics. My family is convinced that this is 100% accurate.

Yes... music in my head constantly. I had to break the habit of making an internal percussion section by lightly grinding my teeth back and forth.
