LOL. No comment on AARP as a money grab operation, but AAA has been trying to seduce me back for years. Being a veteran I already have perks from the VA. It's just nice to be "included." Lord knows I can't afford to join a country club!

Welcome, Neil.

Soon, we’ll teach you the proper way to say “get off my lawn.” My wife reads the magazine. For real.

Just took a quick peek at some of the discounts you get with AARP.

Man, I could have used a lot of that back in college.

My first AARP application was given to me about 7 years ago before Sunday dinner by my mother as it was mailed to my childhood home. She thought it was very funny and she seemed to greatly enjoy presenting it to me. I haven't and don't plan to join, but her enjoyment is just one of many fond memories.

Yup. Trifecta for us moonchildren. That’s not a NASA reference. My mother is a devout astrologer. She’s still out there. FAR out, man. ;-)

I turned 50 on April 1. I also received my AARP membership form. I, of course, didn't reply. I think if you have AAA there's no real need for AARP. Plus, I'm not nearly ready for retirement!

It's kind of humbling. I turned 50 on July 16th. My dad didn't live to see 40, but I'm trying to continue to look forward and not back. I have a lot more life to live and I'm choosing not to live it in shame.
Welcome to the over 50 club! Got no time for shame, nor do I get what anyone should be ashamed of.

Last year I got in the best shape I've been in a long time. Next year looking even better. The hair is thinning rapidly, and that does suck, but all things considered I'm feeling lucky about where I am at 52.

Always have goals and always keep pushing forward! What else is there?

Wasn't it Groucho Marx who said something to the effect of "I wouldn't join any club that would have some like me as a member."

Business trips means hotels and restaurants. I don’t hesitate to use my AARP card.
Neil - I can give you 10% discount on your next McJam loft stay. How is that for a great deal? But you are required to show your card. 😉

LOL, Mary. I may take you up on that. I need to have my wife bake something though.

Semi OT - I used my veteran's discount at the Home Depot the other day. I thought it was only supposed to be 5% but the kid gave me 10% off. He must've hit the wrong button and gave me the active duty military discount. I need to get more "high and tight" haircuts now!

LOWES has a 10% discount for veterans and they register you (My VA card) in the computer as such. They also apply it even on stuff discounted already. Home Depot wouldn't do that!

All jokes aside, AARP is a very effective lobbying organization for senior issues.

Yeah, I don't have a VA card though. I've been told at HD that I need to have a VA card but I already jumped through the hoops at the DMV by providing my DD-214 so that it says VETERAN on my driver's license. If they give me grief in the future they can see how salty this ex sailor can get.
