Belushi was a narcotic wreck of a person. His destruction of the guitar was symbolic of it and I remember thinking that at the time. The pedestrian take on the scene would have otherwise been funny.
Regarding the guitar, if it doesn't have personal catastrophic or global implications I don't get too wrapped up in the fate of the inanimate. |

Hilarious or not? I think the hilarious has won.

To others, no. Why phrase a question as if absolute truth could be established regarding something that is opinion? I could answer you if you'd asked, "Did you, or did you not, find it hilarious when Belushi destroyed the guitar in Animal House?" Last edited by Tico; 07-27-2019 at 10:20 PM. |

Moving this to Open Mic since it's not a guitar discussion but rather an Animal House discussion.
Plus a reminder to play nicely.

Completely hilarious bit. Something many of us wanted to do.

For me ... it was both hilarious and not because I've been both ...
1. The guy who'd like to bash the guitar that's playing something that is IMO obnoxious. Emphasis, IMO. 2. The guy playing the guitar that I'm sure someone else wanted to bash, perhaps because of the music, my ability, or the context. Whatcha gonna do when there is a wide range of people? When Belushi burns down his house at the end of Neighbors it is both inherently more funny than the guitar smash, and a fitting end to the film and his life he seems to have found has only entrapt him/
Guitar smashing was done earlier and more effectively by The Smothers Brothers on the cover of their "It Must've Been Something I Said" Album https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qdRMHN2phkA |

I’m not naming names, but there are a few posts here where I could quote another anti-establishment movie...

Regarding the original question of this thread, I thought pretty much all of Animal House was hilarious. When it came out, my best friend was working at a local tv station. The person who did movie reviews for the station had gotten 2 free passes to see Animal House. The critic had no intention of going because they were convinced it was going to be horrible. So...they gave the tickets to my friend and he invited me. We LOVED it! Loved it so much that we stayed and watched it a second time...because the theaters would let you do that back then. We reported back to the critic and they ended up doing a review that was actually very fair to the movie. It was something along the lines of, "While it's not my cup of tea, two friends who saw the movie raved about it." It's definitely a classic in my book.
