Default 50 Ways To Leave Your Lover by Paul Simon (cover)

This my cover of Paul Simon's "50 Ways To Leave Your Lover" from 1975. Because I wanted to maintain the approach of one singer and one guitar and Paul Simon's recording relies so much on the very characteristic marching drum pattern he used for his recording, I used a modified Travis pick to play my rendition here to maintain the rhythm. I also used my Guild F512 12-string because it has so much punch on the chorus.

The 12-string does tend to somewhat muddy up the sounds of the jazz chords that Paul Simon used on the verses, but after experimenting with other guitars, I wanted the sound of that big chorus from the 12-string.

I hope you like this. Thanks once again for listening!

- Glenn

Hi Jake!

Thanks so very much! I am so glad you thought this came out okay!

Yes, the chorus, I think, is pretty big with that big 12-string. And then I have to sing with some real commitment if I am going to get over the top of that guitar!!

Thanks so much for listening and commenting, Jake!!

That's great, Glenn... I really enjoyed it. I used to love that tune. What will REALLY impress me is if you break out into Steve Gadd's very cool little drum lick. I used to have a lot of fun playing that. We already know that you can nail Paul Simon anytime you try. So, why not take on Gadd next?

Seriously, very nice! I always enjoy hearing that tune. Well done. Thanks!

Hi Kerbie,

Well, if you will record the song's drum pattern and send me a sound file, I will re-record the song using your drums. Wouldn't that be cool??!!

You know, if I knew that was Steve Gadd, I had forgotten! No wonder it sounded so good! I saw Steve Gadd playing drums for James Taylor and his band a few years ago at Tanglewood in Massachusetts on July 4, I think it was 2014. He sure hits a snare drum hard!

Thanks for listening and commenting!

Wow, Glenn! Great job on this song - great all around. Playing, singing, arrangement, the whole thing! Awesome, loved it!

That's the guy... I've heard him called, "The Drummer's Drummer." Not only excellent, but very tasteful. I like listening to him.

Really fine, Glenn! Those high notes ("don't need to discuss much") really hit the mark....no easy task! Super rhythm work as well.
That 12er is just a great sounding guitar.
Bravo!
Fred

Thanks so much Larry!

Well now that you are in the 12-string club, I think you are super alert to the sound!

I do have an advantage in playing the 12-string in that I have been playing one since I was 18 years old. But also, that Guild F512 has such a great sound! I feel so very fortunate to have that guitar!

I am so glad that you liked this rendition! Thanks so much for commenting here and for your support!

Hi Fred!

Thanks so much for expressing your appreciation so graciously!

Those high notes on "don't need to discuss much" are high E and F# notes which are getting up near the top of my range. So they are a challenge for me. I had to sing this song for a while before my voice was warmed up enough to hit those notes solidly. It's a challenge for a guy who is 70 years old now. ()

I do agree, that Guild F512 is just a killer 12-string. I really don't think there is any 12-string sound out there that is quite like this F512. I played an F212 for about 40 years, which I gave to my son once I got the F512. I could see that I would never play that F212 again, as much as the guitar meant to me after all those years. Fortunately, my son is very grateful to have it.

I'm so glad you like this rendition, Fred. Thanks so much for your comments!

Hi Kerbie,

Yeah, Steve Gadd is an amazing drummer! And it takes a drummer, like you, to really appreciate how good he is. Thanks again for your comments!
