When I do a session in the studio, that sort of progression is referred to as 'circle of fifths' and variations of that include this one in this song.

Also, listening to a few of the other samples from Tom Rush, you might give a listen to a cd by Tony Rice titled 'Native American'. There's some similar material and even a couple of tunes Tom Rush done, like the Joni Mitchell tune Urge For Going. If that's your tastes, check it out. BTW, did you get 'Skip, Hop And Wobble' yet by Douglas,Barenburg and Meyer?
Hi Pistolero! I sure wish I had a formal background in music... I probably wouldn't be asking dumb questions if I did. I've heard the term 'circle of fifths' but not sure what it is. I'm one of those people that picked up a guitar when I was twelve and, with the help of friends, just learned on my own. Thank goodness for the AGF! I'm just now learning stuff I should have known thirty years ago!

I'm still waiting for Skip, Hop, and Wobble to come in. I love finding out about new artists so send any ideas my way! Jerry Douglas was playing with AKUS on Austin City Limits the other night. I now know who he is, thanks to you! I'll definitely check out the Tony Rice stuff, and I'm going to order a few Tom Rush cd's, too. I grew up to his music and had forgotten how much I loved some of his songs. Merrimac County is actually pretty easy to do now that I understand the descending baseline stuff.
